If you have to spend money to make money online it's probably a scam. Sounds pyramid schemey & most likely is.
The only thing anyone should really have to spend money on for online purposes is a better server or a domain name purchase, some kind of service such as graphic/web design, etc.

sure you may not spend if you find a free program in which you recruits decide to
upgrade before you do, sure that is a way you can earn money without spending. that is if you are good at reffering.
who ever put that statement in your mad must really had a bad experience online.
first you must be wise about choosing which program you wan to work with
also you must build a team of parners. and you must also do your homework (plan-goal)...
you definitely have to spend something either way, you can't spend money then you have to be wiling to spend the time...
everyone is different, what may work for one may not for another
on this i will respect your opinion

I would definitely need some details before making a decision to invest any amount of money in to anything.

Needing detail is absolutely the right way to start, cause no one can afford wasting money. that is a no no .and i'm mostly looking to build a team.
i have no need for the "stuffing my pocket and go crap" so if interested the personne will be introduce to the program, learn about it, that is my first requirement. see if it fits you. and then we can go from there.
