Is United States a safe place to live?

I plan to go to America to receive my gaduate education.I never travelled to America before.when peopel refer to America,the first impression comes to my mind is a free,rich,developed country. while after seeing the TV play "prison break" and many films related to robbery,I changed my mind.also I read a discussion about home invasion in mylot.I believe these kind of things really existed in American life.as we know common people in America can buy a gun easily.so it may cause a lot of problems. I really want to know the impression in Americans' mind about your country.

just like any where else, some places are safe and other places are not safe. i live near a city with a pretty high crime rate but i've never been, robbed, car-jacked, shot at or anything else. you just have to be smart about your safety and pay attention to whats going on around you.
