One Lined Discussions should be completely Banned!

July 26, 2009 11:48pm CST
I have noticed that in the last week or two there has been an increased number of people posting one lined discussions. I don't know about you but a discussion means you elaborate a little bit of what you intent to talk about.. just like am doing now! One person posted a discussion that simply said "I need job" this person did not explain anything as to why he needs the job or any informative details. This totally angered me and when I wanted to vent my anger on this discussion I found it was deleted. (phew!) So to all you one liners.. either don't post a discussion or take the time to write a bit more of what you want to discuss. You will not get a response from me if you simply write three words.. I'm actually helping you out here as you're most likely not going to make any money here or friends if you post one line discussions.. It's better for you not to write anything at all than post a three word one lined discussion.. Does anybody else here feel annoyed when u see a one lined discussion? Do you respond to these discussions? Your thoughts on this is greatly appreciated.

I am sure your topic discussion here will have a lot of responses and comments. And i am agree with you, starting discussion should not give 1 or 2 sentences only. We should describe ourself opinion before asking some other opinion. And i think, it will takes more than 1 sentences. Or maybe this 'one liners' think have described all already. Who knows?

For those types of discussion I look at the topic and see what the person is asking and if it seems like an important topic I normally will answer their question so therefore they are getting the help they need but then at the bottom I will add a side note about how mylot does look for more detailed responses and for a discussion to actually be started so this is what you should do in the future. I don't think its necessarily wrong to answer but I think at least some person should tell him how the earning system works. And this is only so because even though we all are suppose to be reading the TOC and FAQs how many people honestly do? But for me I think a simple solution would be to make a minimum amount of characters to start a discussion. I think something along the lines of 500 or even more will be fine since at that point at least the initial discussions has some depth in it. And then all the responses would have a minimum amount as well so I won't have to get emails with people responding back to my post "I completely agree!!!". Of course no matter what mylot does I think people will learn a way to abuse the system. Tends to happen no matter what.

Hello Jelly. I hate to see these a well, just as I don't like 3 word responses. I picked up a Shakespeare topic which asked for your favourite work, and all the responses above mine were just the names of the plays. I put in a full response, hoping to encourage others to do the same. If the discussion leader had just added the words 'and why?' I'm sure she would have got some much better responses. I think Mylot need to emphasise that people will not earn for this sort of thing, as I think most of the one liners come from people who mistakenly think that the more discussions they post, the more they will earn. We know it doesn't work like that, and I'm concerned that new members might be put off the site if they see a long list of these non-discussions. I think the idea of the responder above, of having a character limit on topics and posts, is quite a good one. It seems to work well at Helium, although 250 or 300 characters may be a better starting point, as we want to encourage people to post quality, not put them off altogether. Some people who are not used to writing may think 500 characters is an unsurmountable hurdle.

I loved your Shakespear discussion.. although I probably didn't write as much as I was supposed to (sorry was a tired bunny, robbie kept me up all nite!) But I do agree with you that there should a minimum words paste and that mylot shouldn't pay for one lined discussions.

Yes i have seen plenty of them. Most of them which are posted by new users they just post series of one lined discussions. Sometimes i do respond to them if i don't find anything better than that but most of the time i just ignore them. I feel more annoyed when i see thee type of discussions posted by old mylotters.

your totally write about one word decisions being increased. this one blog site told me once i joined i can ask what everyone favorite color was and be done with it. so maybe there reading blogs like those. but i agree 100 percent about one line dicussions (i don't think i ever did them) but i think before people wrote one line they should read a message from mylot saying its against the rules and if seen it will be taken down. i think one line discussions are annoying because half of them don't even tell how they feel about the issue.

I have returned to Mylot after not being active for over 2 years, and am very glad the site is still here and people are still communicating!! I had joined just about 2 months after the site had begun. (And maybe you are an "old-timer" too??) Anyway, when I first started, we had all sorts of basic topics that people had posted very short responses, such as "I am thinking of a number" or "what is your favorite color." Obviously, we all tried to make a quick buck without having to put much efort to it, and then Mylot laid down some rules and had deleted those topics. Some people were outraged that we actually had to sit and think of explanations to a topic. I, for one, who had posted my topics, was getting irritated with very short answers. The purpose of Mylot is to get people talking about issues and to keep conversations going. It's very hard to do when you only get a one-word response.

You're right. I have noticed that too. They are more like a classroom questions. The title and the contents are of the same length. These type of posts should not be allowed here as it will tarnish the good name of this site. I notice this type of posts draws in many responses and I don't understand how they can earn something out of it and it is only a waste of time posting when you don't get paid anything from it. Probably they are not in for the pennies.

yes,i have seen alot of one line statements in the forms of a question. i have answered some of the questions when i had a responses to give. usually my answer is about one or two sentences long. to me the discussion was not very long so why should i response any differently. i know i probably should not do that i should just ignore the one line discussion. by the way i did read the FAQ but i can not remember how many sentences are we suppose to put in our discussions and responses?

I would have to agree with you on this one. And it just seems like they are just being lazy and trying to get a quick buck and it does annoy me. I feel exactly the same way you do and people just are like well I don't have the time to type a whole discussion, but what is the point then and you know what its not even the discussions that are one liner but when people respond they have one liner. I have started a few discussions that I've had maybe one or two responses with 3 words. Like one said "oh I've heard that" or "they tend to do that" without even elaborating on what they mean by that. I'm like huh what. I wonder if I can get their response deleted. Please let me know.

I would say I agree to ya but sometimes it is a problem with the people only intending to increase their ranking. But its upto the MYLOT admin to decide on this.

hi jellymonty, well, i'm not really annoyed to it because it depends on the discussion started... if it's something that asked about a particular thing like "what is your favorite food?", some would definitely post their fave food only without any reason why they liked it, because nobody asked for it in the first place (so it's one word reply)... BUT again, what you say is TRUE... if a user really want to start a discussion, he must put an effort into it... we start discussion because we want to share opinions and other stuffs, and we want to learn from others' point of view... right? so starting a one line discussion won't share anything from the author... so how can he expect reliable replies? personally, i would not reply to those "one liners" because they won't stir my reasons to do so... maybe they think of mylot discussions as a chatbox, wherein they can expect an instant response... hehehe! in the end, one lined discussions won't last that long... so let those who want to reply, reply... and you, continue to start discussions like these... it will help us here in mylot to discuss responsibly and sincerely...keep up the good work... God bless you...

yeah....as many ppl are into mylot jus for sake of earning purpose oneliners make a time n energy saving trick for dem.... but is it so dat oneliners wont fetch u cents???im a newbie here n donno d rules...plss explain me....though its not the right place.... well...i do elaborate things to the required level...n agree with the ts's point that in a discusion things are to be elaborated... but we do things in opposite way...here we throw oneliners n in a chat window we keep keying for a long(instead of oneliners)n keep the other person annoyed....

For me it is the topic of the discussion that is crucial, not the presentation. I would prefer the question to be short and to the point. Too often you see people having 'the verbal squits' and writing 10 words when one would do. It is not just a question of length. (as the actress said to the archbishop)

I absolutely wholeheartedly agree with you on this one. If you can't be bothered putting in the effort - don't bother. In my experience the people that post the one liners are fairly new and haven't found their feet on the site yet so it could be worth dropping them a message to remind them how to use the site to optimise earnings, so it can be seen as help rather than criticism.

Well, I do see your point here. In fact, they don't know what to write and they need more information before they could. To me, I don't mind reply to those who wrote even 3 words in any discussion. My opinion is we should look at their needs and or what are they up to. Cheer up. Happy Mylotting.

Hi Jellymonty, I think I've put a couple of one line questions on but actually wanted them answered but did explain why I was asking so that doesn't really make them one liners! When I've done this though I actually wanted an answer and didn't intend a discussion to follow and find that these questions have had more responses than the discussions I start. I've tried to stop them, I say the answer has been given, problem solved, but still the answers come in,often a reptition of the answers already given which shows people don't read the other answers. Even giving an early best response doesn't stop them, and it's hard to comment back to responses when they are similar. On the flip side what I think are really interesting discussions have few responses and one reason given is that people can't be bothered to read the long introductions which I'm guilty of. In answer to your question I don't answer the type of discussions you mention as they aren't discussions as there is no interaction.

Or when they post a discussion and they put a question in the title and then just out loads of question marks in the discussion box as opposed to elaborating. That really annoys me that is my main pet hate!

I am one of the new member of this community and I wondered about what they wants to tell or share with the other with few words. I red nearly 10 discussions started " visit my profile" within a week of my mylot activity. They are ready to even describe as what are they having in their profile. In addition to that, we are able to see 100s of responses with two or three words. Totally the discussions and the responses are not able to understand to anyone.I am not sure as are they doing for fun or are they not aware of the discussion guideline. Most of such discussions are getting deleted soon. But they are continuing the same. Hope they will start posting descriptive discussions and responses.
