Never mind, keep the change - do you often say this after a good service?

Yesterday I took my pets to the park. They had fun running around and it was a good exercise too. Now, going home we have to take a ride on a tricycle cause’ I can’t have the pets ride on a jeep cause’ there are other passengers too. Riding a tricycle is a bit expensive and sometimes drivers take advantage especially if they can see you can’t ride a jeep so they would ask a fare for two. My trip back home is a few blocks away and I wouldn’t be giving extra fare. Anyways, I still called a tricycle. The driver was kinda nice. He was respectful and just allowed me to take the ride. Sometimes even before you take the ride some drivers would tell you outright that it’s a fare for two or that they would ask the amount they like you to pay. Some are really taking advantage but the driver I found wasn’t like that. So when I reached home, I paid him and he was reaching to his pocket to give me my change. I just told him never mind, just keep the change and he said thank you. I wouldn’t mind paying extra after a good service. What about you guys?

yes. if i got a good service i feel satisfied i usuallly give the tips to them. here it is a tradition. people all do like that. sometimes even for not very good service i also paid a little tips just for politeness. however if i'm very unsatisfied with the service i got i would not pay tips. i don't mind they are unhappy or not, because they made me unhappy first. also i think it's a good way to let them provide better service later.

Hi! I don't give tips also when I don't get good service. Sometimes in establishments with suggestion boxes for customers I would comment on their giving of poor service and that serves as my tip for them hehe.

Yeah that's why I really find the driver so nice and just fair. He didn't urged me to pay more. He never said a thing about the fare when actually I was waiting for him to say something. Normally when I ride a tricycle, I always prepare a fare for two and sometimes I would have to argue with the driver. The good driver spared all the trouble that day. By the way, I like your avatar, Cinderella.. I think you're the only member who used a fairytale character as avatar. It find it nice. Keep posting!

I do that too. If the service is good and the driver is not asking outright for additional fare. I want it to be on my dicrestion to give extra or not. Like riding a cab going home from work, sometimes if its later drivers ask for extra since i live far from work and that they have to get inside the subdivision. I think about the time they goes out and get another passenger, but then thats their job and that it has meter, but if the driver just drives off without saying a word or when sometimes they would give out a few chat, i give extra.

I think the same like you. I want it to be my discretion whether to pay extra or not. I am a fair passenger I know and I do understand that drivers are experiencing economic burden of gas price hikes. I know it's hard to earn a living as a driver so I am willing to pay extra if ever but I don't want drivers urging me to pay more. Happy posting!

I see you are in the Philippines, where I live we dont have that choice, you are very lucky and you are lucky to have found an honest driver. I am sure that the way you treated this person will make them continue to keep treating others well in the future. What we do in our lives has a ripple effect, be good to others and they will feel good about themselves and "pay it forward", not with money but with good intentions. Well done, I would have done exactly the same. And being an animal lover myself, I understand where you are coming from

Hi ritz! I've always believed in karma. The saying, "what you don't want others do unto you, do not do unto them", that's why I've always try to be good to others. I hope there would be more drivers like the one I encountered. And you know what, I even felt more happy that driver said thank you. I think that's priceless. Happy posting!

I don' personally encourage the practice of giving people tips - sorry, i come from a differnt cultural background. I always think "don't they get paid for what they are doing" and giving tips seems more like a charity to me. But as i need to cope with the trend i do pay people tips if they are exceptionally good in their service :)

Sometimes I mutter those words, "don't they get paid for what they are doing" , but only to those whom I find lazy in performing their duties especially when I am asking for additional service. Happy posting!

Dear iskayz, it is the right attitude for not taking advantage of someone when they are in need. This tricycle driver is a responsible and have a right attitude. When you expect the worst, it run out to be good, we will feel extra good! This feeling is priceless. "Keep the change" is the best I can do to show my appreciation! Of course not a very big amount...moderate tips is okay! May God Bless this nice driver and you too! Happy myLotting and do keep in touch!

Yes friend, the feeling is priceless.. The change I gave wasn't that big, but I know it's not the amount that's important but my gesture of being thankful enough for letting me take the ride with no mean intention of taking advantage of my situation. Always see you around Irene!

I alway tip for a good service and but I have only said keep the change when it was a small bill or once in India to a little girl that was selling mangoes. Ninety rupees is nothing to me its about 50 cents but to this little girl it was a fortune. About the same as a $5 bill tip to a coffee server in the US.

Oh, how old was the girl? I pity those kids who have to work at an early age just to survive. Yeah, 50 cents could be just a lose change for us but to some unfortunate people, they are worth big and you can see a big smile on their faces. I think you have soft heart for kids. Happy posting!

Oh hi kababayan! Yes, drivers can be very greedy for money. I guess that only shows that being a driver is hard to earn money but being greedy, they wouldn't be blessed. Persons who are poor but show greediness aren't pitiful rather they are annoying. Happy posting!

If it's a good service and I have extra money to spare I'll generally do a "Keep the tip" thing. I like giving back when I can, unfortunately I don't have a lot of extra money right now so I'm one of those "Make sure you get the right amount of change" people right now. Hopefully once things pick up again I can.

Frugal living, yes I do the same when I don't have enough money especially when I need to take another ride. I know drivers don't think everyone will pay extra so I guess it's ok not to give extra fare. Keep posting!

For delivery services, yes I tell them to keep the change. In retail situations, I do want my change, but if I really like the service I will tell them to keep the extra. But I only really tell them to keep the change if it is a service, not a store usually.

Hi! I don't give tips at retail situations. I only give tips for personalized service such as waiters, drivers, delivery services and other personalized services. But I don't always give tips. I'm not a rich person but I feel happy with the service, I'd be willing to give extra. Keep posting!

the place where i am from...if u give tips or some amt on appreciation, dey think they are too good at it....no doubt he serves u better next time....but he expects same rewards from others...n eventually he does quality work only if assured of a tip.....dis exactly is bribery... so i think we pull him into corruption by paying tips

Hi! I don't think there's nothing wrong with giving tips. Its just like an added gesture of thank you more. I don't also consider it bribery cause tips are given after a service while bribery is given in exchange of a favor not yet being done. Tips are only in small amounts while bribery is much much bigger. Besides, for those who are under the rendering service business, they are obliged to give good service with or without the tips otherwise they're bosses might fire them hehe. Keep posting!

U know, that all depends on how much the change is! I'm going through a few dollr issues so anything over $1 has to come back to me, seriously!!! I tip n all that, but only if I can! But, I have to say, depends on the circumstances!! Taripre$

My parents always told me to do that (giving tips) when we get a good service, so it's something ordinary here in my family. Sometimes in the restaurant we didn't take the change and leave it as tips. I think it's fine, nothing wrong with that. They already give us good service and hope tips will motivate them and.. nothing wrong in giving something^^,, That's what my parents told me and I do so for years^^,,

Hi! Manisha. In this case when I receive a good service I do give a tip which is the custom in hotels and other public places but if giving someone extra money is also one of my good habit. I said Good habit because I always say to cable driver or rickshaw driver to keep the change "if they turn their engines off on the signals (traffic signals) just to appreciate their awareness towards the enviornmental duties. Which every one does not follow apart from all the adv. on TV etc.
