Should I Take The Job?

Philippines
July 28, 2009 12:39am CST
I'm a fresh a graduate. For my first job I took a 2 months contract and now it's about to end in 2 weeks time. Just today I got a call from one of my pending applications and they have already offered me a position for a 6 months contract. The thing is, the place is quite far from my home and it's a night shift, meaning I have to work at night and rest and sleep at day time (which I'm not used to). Plus the fact that it's probably dangerous to be commuting during night time. Though the pay is rewarding. So should I take it? or not?

Hmm.. you don't mention about your first job, can you continue the contract after 2 months contract end? If the answer is yes, I think you better stick on that job. You already start something there and the road to your career are pretty clear. If you take the second offer about night job, you actually will start over again from scratch, you already know that you won't be comfortable there, actually you have your answer already, right?

Hi flaredust! actually I can't continue anymore my first contract since it's just a reliever position. Regarding the 'night shift' thing, how would I know if I won't try right? I guess the answer's right there LOL!

Yeah there you go, so now you are sure of what your choice, just do it right away without a doubt. Just addition, try to look for more permanent job, not just interim contract, it could help you build your career better.

The odds are all against you. That is your sign. The graveyard shift is not so inviting anyway. Look for another job. It will come if you look at the right places. I wish you luck.

I think you should take the job, as a fresh graduate you should always grab the job opportunities that are coming to you. And as you have said the salary is rewarding, and if you have problem for the danger of commuting during night time, you can try to rent a bed space, or a room near to that work place.

Thanks Brienn! I would really consider that. Let's just hope I would still have time to post at myLot by then LOL! :)

Hmmm....firstly is this contract from the same company,if yes it means that they liked your work and want you to be associated with them, therefore if the work interests you ,you should continue. You may get opportunity to be regular(permanent employee),after these 6 months.

yes you can say that it's from the same company but different branch. It doesn't interest me that much since it's my first time with that kind of work. But I guess you're right that it can be my stepping stone. Thanks shv214!:)

It depend son priority. If you are not comfortable, look for other jobs.If Money is only consideration, you can consider this as well. It depends on choice.

If the job is not causing problems to your health and the pay is rewarding then it is good to stick with the job.I think in the night the company will provide you transport to reach home.I was too working on contract for a company.I got the night shift to do.after finishing two months of night shift. The salary was very less and i was not paid my final salary.

For a fresh graduate like you, you should develop a portfolio of relevant work experiences. It will form part of your credentials later on e.g., when applying for a job which is more stable and offers more competitive salary. So, take the job, considering that there are thousands or millions of Filipinos looking for one. If it's a night shift, then it's but part of your "training ground" as you begin your journey in the country's workforce. I'm sure you can manage.

well. i just want to know the wage when i read your posts..now since the pay is rewarding and the recessing really destroied everything. why do not take it and that's not along time. just 6months and i think you can get used to it soon. but be careful when you work there and is there any way to continuse the contract again after that 6months? i mean will they shift you to day time worker ?

Hello friend, If you feel the Jobs, is very much rewarding? Why don't try to relocate near that jobs sites. If that is 30 minutes travel from your home, I think need not to relocate. Just think about it well, my friend. Finding a jobs for a fresh graduate today is hard to find a jobs. That is an opportunity knocking in your door. Just be patient, because the important things nowadays to landing in a better jobs is experience. If you have more experience don't have to worry applying again in a company near you. Safety is not an assurance in every place today. Even that is your own house if those criminals want to do harm with you is getting right there, right? Just be careful to walk at night. Just aware in your surroundings if you are walking. Just avoid dark places...that is my only humble tips on safety yourself. Happy mylotting...!!!

These days it is difficult to get a good job. If you feel that you can get a better job, then go for that job rather this one. One more advise I would like to offer you, think of long term. Answer yourself whether this job will give you better knowledge and scope for improving your skills so that you can get a much more better job in future??? Also, Night job should not be a problem for a fresh graduate. You should be ready for everything and be ready to jump into every situation, of course, if that leads to better prospects. Commuting during the day time is no less dangerous, so that should not be 'the' main concern., rather the scope and prospectus of the job. That my personal advise, you better consult your peers who should be in a better position to advise you. Best of luck in your venture.

Nowadays, jobs are hard to come by. Whatever job that comes to you, grab it first. The distance, I think, shouldn't be a problem unless you have kids or older folks to take care of at home. Think carefully, are you afraid of the danger, or the distance? Or are you not sure what you're getting yourself into with the new job? Check out the new place / company. Is it an established one? If it's better than now, then go for it. If you're afraid of your safety, then it's better you extend your current contract. Better still, try getting a full time job nearby. Well, the thing is, whatever you choose, there will be sacrifices to make. I'm not sure if this "advise" helps, but that's my point of view. take care, and share with us your decision.

What kind of work is it? The commuting at night isn't that big of a deal unless you are in a dangerous area. I think a lot of it will have to do with your safety at the job. If the job appeals to you, I say go for it. Plus the one good thing is that it's only a 6 month contract, so say after 6 months and you feel that it wasn't right for you, you don't have to do it again.

I've worked night shift for years and yes, it will take its toll. It's something you never quite get used to for obvious biological reasons. But, now, if it's not too far and you have a decent car...go for it! Keep in mind when you leave for work, it's probably not terribly late and by the time you come home, it will be early morning. It's not that bad. However, if you live in city and have to commute by subway or something...I wouldn't want to do that. Good luck!

Take the job if you only enjoy what your going to be doing. Jobs have to be something you are willing to do. If you hate your job you aren't going to get anywhere. Plus if the job has good pay, good place, thats a bonus for you.

well I think you have to see the various trade-offs here.On one hand you are getting a job for 6 months for a decent salary, however on the other hand you have to work at odd hours, disturb your sleep-cycle,take risk of travelling at odd hours. See what is imortant to you.Is there a way that you can find out another job near your place in this 2 weeks period that you have left for the first contract to expire?
