Reading is good or bad?

My parents always insisted that I read as much as possible and that included educational material, books, novels or literature of any kind. Since people have started to use the internet much, they have lost out on reading. What would you prefer, reading or surfing the net.

Why do you consider reading and surfing the net as opposites? Unless you spend all your time playing games online, looking at Youtube, or jumping from one site to another, the internet is all about reading. The complaints that people aren't reading books, magazines, or newspapers any more aren't because people are reading less. It's because they're reading what's on the internet. I spend whole days reading articles and other types of information that I find on the internet. I can read dozens of opinions and analyses of current news events. I can read good literature. Reading or the net isn't an either/or thing. Reading is reading, whether it's print on paper or pixels on a computer screen.

Hi doreen, I think your parents are right. We could learn lots of useful knowledge and information by reading. Besides reading widely with different types of books not only could enrich our language, it could also enhance our writing skill. So it's right to cultivate with such good habit since our childhood. I did buy lots of interesting books of different varieties for son since kindergarten. It's also easy to take care of the small boy for he would engrossed in his favorite books if I was busy with my household chores Both my son and I like reading both the books as well as the e-books online. Other than surfing net for other purpose parents should guide their kids to the read the e-papers as well as the e-books. Happy posting

Reading is a valuable skill. There are so many books that are enjoyable to read and educational at the same time. There is a wealth of high quality literature from the past. Poetry can be delightful to read. Non fiction books can be really informative. A teenager can improve their spelling by reading lots of books. I adore the Internet like My Lot because it is an excellent site. I also love reading books. I studied English Literature at university. I would say the Internet is now just as important to me as reading books. When I was a student I hated computers and thought they were a waste of time. Now I think totally differently.

Personally, I prefer reading books. I don't mind surfing the net, but it's not something that I really enjoy doing. I've just been more of an avid reader of books. I've just been more interested in reading rather than surfing the net. It's just part of who I am.

I prefer real books any day. Who wants to stare at the screen or print all those pages out? They can be nice to have for reference though.

I prefer to read something in the book however I also like to surf so I do both at a time, hopefully I love to do both else I might have seen myself with only one option either to surf or to read. I read a lot though.

haha i love both actually. this is only from my observation but people who get good grades at school are mostly book nerds and read A LOT. my parents have also always told me that reading will help me improve my vocabulary and make me smarter and i used to read a lot. but now like you, because of the internet, i don't have time to read and i just surf the net.
