Here in India , the government is going to provide a Unique Identification card with a Unique Identification code to all citizen. With these cards, it will be easy to find out all the data of a person starting from date of birth, qualification, Address, Driving licence details, passport details, gas connections etc.etc ... Which other countries having this system ?

In the United States we have about the same thng. We are all issued a Social Securtiy Card. It has our own unique number by which we are identified. There are good sides and bad sides... but with it you can find out about anythng about anyone!

With a general election due in the UK early next year, there isevery possibility that plans to introduce identity cards are likely to come to nothing. As far as I am concerned identity cards are a total and expensive waste of time. I think the present government actually wanted people to pay for the dubious privilege of having them forced upon them.

Hi......basil Thank you for participating in this discussion. In India Government is providing it free of cost. But indirectly this is paid by the people as government spends the tax payer's money for this purpose.

OUCH! Holy big brother :/ Such a system here would be considered "orwellian" and big brotherish. Though our government has introduced milder form of this, my state has laws that forbid it being introduced here. This type of thing here is handled by the various states rather than our national government. Driver's licenses, non-driver's id's etc, are all things delt with at the state level. Most of us would consider a national ID a big government intrusion and we don't take lightly to that.
