GMA and US President Obama meeting: Valuable or not?

Philippines
July 30, 2009 3:26am CST
Today, GMA and US President Obama will meet at White House. Although it is only a 45-minute meeting, it is said to be very important especially for us Filipinos as it may invite another support from US. However, the meting will be short and there are 20 congressmen who will come with her which means the cost is very expensive. While it is true that it will be a great honor for us that President Obama will notice us, do you think the meeting will be valuable? I think it is somehow, but we will not feel the impact at once. What do you think? No hurting words, please.

Meetings such as this are always valuable because they are part of diplomatic relationship between nations. The US has been a "partner" of the Philippines for many decades already. No matter how many people may hate the US, it is still one of the most powerful nations in the world. Thus, fostering diplomatic tie ups with the US is mostly advantageous. Seeking "economic assistance or trades" or other "revenue-generating" partnerships are always part of any meetings especially between a developed country and a less developed one.

In a way it is valuable in our country we are going to benefited from it but I think asking for favors in return. We know that US is powerful country the Philippines is still continuing the alliance to them because they are helpful to us. What I hate about it is the congressmen that don't have business there. They wasting our money and they are useless in that meeting.

They are there as a "doowop" group to back up GMA (heheh). Their function, I suppose, is to talk to "Obama's men" to firm up whatever has transpired during the meeting of the two leaders. Others might be linking with relevant groups in the US again to foster meaningful relationship. I agree, though, that there are too many people in her contingents. Two to three "key people" would have been enough.

It's always a good thing for both parties to meet because it only means good relationships between both countries.. hehe ^_^ IT does not really matter how long or short the meeting is, as long as the main points are being brought up during the meeting.. Who knows this valuable meeting might brign about something good to your country as well as for all the citizends based in USA?? hehe

The meeting was valuable and even it last for more than 30 minutes. They talk a lot and agreement between the two countries emerge. This will surely brought many benefits and to consider that pres. Gloria Arroyo is the first asian president that pres. Barack Obama invited is a great pleasure and a symbol that each countries recognized each other as a alliance.

Yes, I believe that there is some importance that the two presidents will meet. But the problem is, whenever GMA travels, she takes along a convoy of so many politicians that it is very expensive, She takes along her husband and children and so many others, you think they're going to a party. It is an honor of course to be invited to the white house and it is but prudent for our president to come, but I just hope that whenever she leaves the country that she doesn't take her whole political party with her. I understand the need for world leaders to meet and confer, talk about ties and such, most especially the US president who holds so much clout, I think it will be very beneficial, but right now in our country where there are so many poor, I just hope that they consider just giving out the costs to help alleviate poverty instead of traipsing around the world in a whole entourage.

President Obama is known for being very capable of doing large tasks in small amounts of time. He's an epic multi-tasker, or less kindly, hyperactive by huffing underlings. People literally chase him in the corridors of the Whitehouse. You can expect much of the ground work for this meeting to already be done before any one sits down at the meeting. Note Obama keeps a Presidential Blackberry glued to his hip 24/7. * By the time the meeting is underway, the minutes are set to paper in neat little chunks.

It means a lot because we can not deny the fact that we need the support of president Obama for our economy. We need their support for the peacetalk in Mindanao. Nothing is personal on that meeting, Arroyo was brilliant enough in promoting our country. Have a nice day here in mylot !

Well I think for as long as the help provided by US would indeed go to us then fine. For as long as the 20 Congressmen would also be of real help there not be there for the leisure then its fine. For as long as the those members of the government would not used too much of public funds then that is all fine.

well, i really think that the meeting will serve its purpose. that is to talk about the US interests here in the Philippines and try to see what future support the US can provide for the us. i believe that it's an honor for president obama to see GMA. i think also that their talk will be timely and it will also involve talks about the upcoming elections. no matter what the outcome of the talk will be, this meeting is still valuable for both nations. it's always important to have good relations between two nations and meeting such as this serves that purpose.

Well, I think the meeting between GMA and Obama is valuable for both nations. The Philippines will always be a strategic ally of US in this part of the world and the Philippines could always use this alliance to good use. However, given the number of congressmen who accompanied PGMA, there will always be some doubts of their purpose/s and of course, cost us, taxpayers. I just hope that the value of the meeting will be felt sooner.
