Do you back up your computer?

I had a fatal crash on my computer about 10 years ago and I hadn't backed anything up at all. I lost all my writing, all my photographs, my address book and it was beyond recovery. I vowed then to back up regularly using in those days, a CD rewriter. Now though, I have got an external hard drive called ClickFree, that I saw on the shopping channel. All I need to do is to plug it in to the USB port and it just backs up all my files without me having to go and look for them. It takes about 5 minutes a day after an initial full back up that took about half-an-hour. Do you back up? Have you any horror stories to tell about losing files?

Yes, I've always backed up most of my files and work before reinstalling Windows. I've done it when I was really young when we got our first DVD Writer, and so I've been doing it since. I would hate to lose files, but from time to time I forget to back up something and when I reinstall Windows I'm like 'noooo' to myself. :] I remember once losing all my songs I had. But good thing most of them were in my Ipod and was able to take them off the Ipod. :D

I am not a computer savvy and many times I have lost files through my ignorance. But now I have learned to use a pen drive to store my files.

Yes I do. My data is on the laptop and desktop and synced to a the server at home. This server has a RAID, so even a disk can blow up. Very important stuff I backup otherwise.

I always forget to do that. Hopefully my comp won't fail sometime soon. Just kidding from now on, i will backup comp. I'll set it on auto...so i don't have to manually backup everyday. I feel you, i've had a crash a few years back and it wasn't fun. Luckily, my gateway computer had a built in automatic backup so it was alright.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I would advise you to back up your important files. A hard drive can work well for months or even years, then one day, unexpectedly, it will just die.. Happy mylotting. - Derek

Yes I backup my data once or twice a month for my pc at home. In office they do daily backups ! Backing up is a good practice. So is disk clean up and disk de-fragmentation it improves ur PC performance.

Thanks for responding. Yes, it is good to defrag from time to time. I used PerfectDisk 7. I find it much better than the installed Windows versions. - Derek

Well it's always great to have backup. If you make it a habit, then it is not that much of a chore. Though not everyone is willing to spend a couple of hundred more bucks on an e.g. external hard disk just for some emergency scenario that may not happen.

Yes and NO. Yes I do back up important files on CD. However I need to make a back up of my whole computer information on external hard disk. I have bought it months ago but I never bothered to do the backing up. I am trying to put all my files in order and I seem to be too lazy to do even that :)

Yes, I know the feeling because it takes time to do back-ups and when I have finished with the computer for the day, I want to finish for the day and not mess about with backing stuff up! However, I have a bit of a schedule now of doing a back-up around lunchtime and then again in last thing before logging off every other day. Because I do it so often, it doesn't take so long. Thanks for your response.. _Derek

Hi Derek, Yea I know it's an old topic but... I had bad experience with computer last time so it has been such an old habit already that I store very few things locally on my drives. Whatever that is important, I would have a backup copy online (I just send to my email account). Also, I have a thumbdrive I use for this purpose too, not that I have a lot of things to back up.

Hey, No I have never backed up my computer, not even once. Personally I don't really think I have very important files, so if something happens, I just merely do a total re-format. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

yer, its a good idea to backup your computer if you keep files on there that are important, but the thing that most people do is they back it up once and never do it again. Make sure you back it up at least every couple of months.

Hi derek, i have made back up of my files before. I have loose some files though, but nothing that is not recoverable as in your case. Yeah you are right, external hard drive are very handy this days and have made us forget those hard moments were you need to back it up on cds were the space wasnt enough and also it could get scratched and stop working.

I have only lost files due to viruses. I once caught myself a super bad virus that wouldn't let my computer turn on any more. The only solution I had was to completely wipe the hard drive which would mean all my files were lost. Ever since then I purchased a similar device to the one you talked about. Also I use an online back up called SOS that automatically backs up my files to a remote server. I do this because if anything ever happened on site (at my house) such as a fire or flood all my files would be gone, including the ones on the back-up drive.

I store almost all my data on a separate [external] 250G Hard Drive, so the only thing I backup is some stuff in my "Documents and Settings Folder", and generally it's only the Preferences and Bookmarks for the software I am using.

Thanks for posting. Yes, I do the same, I back up just my documents and Internet favorites. If there is a fatal crash then I know that all I have to do is reinstall my programs on the new drive and all the documents will be available for me. - Derek

I back up my data once a week. But for safe measure I always create different partition or use a different hard disk for my home directory. So if my file system crashes and have the operating system reformatted and reinstalled I still have my home directory and its data intact. But if my home directory in the same hard disk, I will lost all my data if the hard disk crashes.

I used to have the back up of some important software programs in the form DVDs and CDs. As we have 4 systems in our home, all the important data, will be available in at least three of our systems so that we can make use of them , if we happened to loose them in ny of the systems. If the important documents are small in size, then I will send it to some other email id of mine from my personal id, which is from different domain, so that we can access them from any of the mail account. Now I have planned to buy a external hard disc for my storage and soon I will but it. I have lost my important data once, three years back. From then I started storing them in different computers.I tried to store some data online. But I removed them soon, for the security reasons as we can not trust the online storage sites.

Thanks for responding. I agree that on-line storage is not ideal and I have heard of people having photographs taken and used on other websites. I keep my non-important files with my free Yahoo account where they give me some storage space. Not good to keep personal data there though. Happy mylotting. - Derek
