Gmail by default is not secure...why?

I love Gmail and all they have done with it since I had my account back in the days when you had to be invited to have it where just anyone couldn't sign up. It has come along way since then but what really bothers me is how by default your email is not secure. You have to personally change the settings to make it more secure. For those of you who don't know how it's like this. - Click on "Settings" in the top right - Scroll all the way down to where it says "Browser Connection" and click the "always use HPPTS" radio button - Save changes Any ideas as to why they would make this an option YOU have to initiate?
