I would like to do some portraits of my kids before school starts but I am having and issue deciding on a background. What do you use? I tried a couple of our sheets but they are all a little to floral or plaid and not working.

Personally, my favorite type of photography is grungy styleish. Like for instance take your kids down near old buildings and such. They buildings provide for an excellent background and terrific contrast through the colors. Also if you live around any railroad tracks (abandoned for safety reasons of course) it produces beautiful pictures. That's how I've seen several of my friend's pictures taken and it is absolutely gorgeous.

We took Halloween pictures at an old over grown Church last year and they came out great, I also have used some of the rundown old barns in the area, we do not have much commercial or "city" buildings in our area but I will keep them in mind.

what about going to a park that has flowers out and has the lawn cut nicely? i have seen some nice potraits done on rocks and in front of flowers or perhaps a water feature such as a fountain? i think scenery is the key.

yup, goin' out in a park and having some fun while taking some photos would be the best ideea. You could shoot something more formal and even something more candid in the park. Just let your kids play and have the time of their life, and capture some of those moments, and after that pose them for some more formal photos. good luck!

What about photographing them outside in the yard or perhaps at a park. I don't know where you live or what your surrounding are like so it's hard to say. There is a lovely park near my home that is so beautiful that many people have pictures of themselves done there. There is something about the greenery being the background that makes a lovely picture, well in my opinion anyway. If that isn't something you can do then what about finding a wall in your home that makes a good background. Say on the stairs, or looking out a window, there are all kinds of things you can try and play with until you find what you are looking for. Here is a link that may help you. http://www.livingpictures.org/portraitphotography.htm Hope this helps, good luck and Brightest blessings, Mari

Thank you for the link. I too love outside shots but our weather has been terrible. All rain, though I got some good ones of the kids and dogs in a huge puddle. So many of our pictures are outside I wanted something a little diffrent. I have a wall painted with chalk board paint that I tried to use and the pictures came out nice......not quite right though. You know how it is when you want something in-particular but nothing seems to be working just right.
