Do you treat animals like people?

Furry friends - Little people with fur

I have several pets in my house and I love them all very dearly. My friends and family know how ‘eccentric’ I can be with them. They laugh at my expense as I chat to my ‘little people with fur’ and drive around in my car usually with a dog in the front and a feline comfortably lying on the back seat. Am I stark raving mad? The other day my friend dropped in and I opened the door with a budgerigar on my shoulder. She shook her head as she walked in with eyes rolling. “What’s wrong with that?” I wondered. Am I strange? Does anyone else treat their animals like people?

its not mad, you are just showing how much you love and care for them, and misses them so much, thats why they ride with you hehehe. its ok. we do that here sometimes, taking out pets to other places but just sometimes... i treat them good and just like a member of a family, sometimes talk to them too, i dont know if they understand me. hehehe.

I think that they probably understand more than what we give them credit for! I talk to my pets all the time; they do my deepest and darkest secrets (LOL)! Thanks for the response shhheila!

Hello paula, I absolutely love animals. However, I don't think I would go as far as driving with a bird on my shoulder. There are times when animals can be better company than people, especially when you need the attention without the advice. I'd say in your case you are probably a little excentric.

Oh I don't take the bird out! He sits on my shoulder at home but I definitely do not take him outside. The thing that makes me 'different' is that one of my cats tags along whenever I take the dog out anywhere. I can't take them everywhere of course but they are usually with me as much as possible!

Oh, so the picture I conjured up of you driving with a bird on your shoulder, a cat in the back, and a dog sitting beside you is not true. Incidently, where does your husband sit?

When my husband is in the car he is always driving and there are no pets allowed. So you see it is a choice him or my 'babies' uhmmm...Depends on the day!

Hi paula, it's so nice if I could see the lovely budgeigar resting on your shoulder. At the moment I don't keep any pet due to the lack of time. Anyway I did keep some different animals as pets before. Few years back I had my pet fish in the tank. I talked to my adorable flower horn fish when I fed it and before my bedtime. It would swim near me and stayed still looking at me. The espression from its eyes seemed that it understood what I's taling about The dog my dad kept during my middle school days quite closed to me. I was the only person in my family who liked to take it to stroll in the nearby park in the evening. There my dear pet and I would meet people walking their respective pet dogs as well. I usually would spend 40 minutes or so having fun strolling around the park. Happy posting

We have adopted three fish since I posted this discussion, they are only goldfish but they are beautiful and fun to look at. I love my animals and I wish I could have more but my husband has out his foot down and said 'no more' darn! Pets do require a lot of time, that is true... Thanks for responding lkbooi!

LOL Hi Paula, no, no! there is nothing wrong with that,i also do that with my pets, i talk to them a lot and they seems to understand what am i saying. the attachment between us (me and my pet) is very deep, and people who watch this will think it's funny but i don't care, my heart was fulfill when i'm around them and it's enough.. I remember Rado,.. i was totally alone in a big house of my bos only with rado,.. and the most memorable memories is how he always happy to see me comes home, no mather how awful i am that day, bad or sinful that day i am, he great me with his wagging tail and said "arrruuuwgghh...!" i'm so missed him.. andi think... he was the only one in this world that accept me for who i am... God make animals so precious..

It sounds like you really love Rado, pity you couldn't adopt him! Animals love us totally unconditionally and that is what makes them so beautiful. I adore all my pets; my husband says I care for them more than I care about some people (LOL) I'm afraid he may be right to a certain extent! Thanks for stopping by diansinta!

Hello Paula. I believe there's nothing wrong with treating your animals with care and talking with them, i believe any animal pet lover (including me) does it. I especially enjoy when they respond back, even if i have no clue to what they are saying. If i was in your friend's place, i would have been curios not annoyed :)

Thanks elitess! I am a tad eccentric when it comes to my animals, just last weekend I took my cat on a picnic and I did get a few looks! To me they are much more than pets, I love them and they make me happy and they do respond to me for sure, in fact pets are a lot smarter than what a lot of people give them credit for! Thanks for responding!

Hi Paula, Well the concept is laudable indeed. We, I mean I treat dogs and cat with care but when question comes about treating them on the level of human being may be there would emerge a difference. After all a human is a human and an animal is an animal. I know they well reciprocate to the love and affection that we show as tree and plants too do. May be I could let my dog a share in my bed or the cat but not all. However treating them with care is a different thing.

I sleep with one of my cats every night! ("Of course", says Rajiib!) Although my family always comes first, I can't help but put animals in the same level as humans, they mean that much to me. Appreciate the response Rajiib!

Yes, animals need to be taken care of, whether they ar pet or not. This emphasizes our integration with the lives of the animals as a rule of Nature! All animals are of certain vital benifit to the other animal and humans also! But in my opinion it is not easy to treat the animals like people. This is because, people are people and animals are animals! Thanks for this nice posting and have a good-day!!

LOL I manage to treat my pets especially my cats like little people which does seem somewhat strange to some but I love them and they make me very happy. I have met other 'eccentrics' like me so I know I am not alone. I get some funny looks when I take my cat out though... Thanks for responding Mitraa, I appreciate it!

I have 4 pets (2 dogs and 2 cats) and they are my babies. They take their turns sleeping with us on our bed at night, and basically rule over the house, so yes I'd say I treat my animals like people too. Nothing wrong with it in my humble opinion. Keep it up!

Thank you ronnyb! I no longer care what others think. The other day we went to a park in the city for a picnic and I took one of my cats; he was inside a special carry bag I have for him. We sat ourselves down on a nice blanket and started eating our dinner while the cat stayed in his bag. When we finished eating I opened the bag and out jumped my cat, I put a long lead on him and he had fun wondering around, what was amusing was the look on other people's faces when they saw a feline leap out of my bag! Thanks for responding, I appreciate it!

I dont abuse animals but then I dont treat them the same way I would a human .I mean I wouldnt have them in my bed or on my table animals are supposed to know their place .I have often read of celebrities who put their animals in clothes and build huge homes for them, things they would never do for a human .

I don't have my pets on the table for hygienic reasons but one of my cats sleeps on my bed every night and that is fine with me! My cats are very clean and they only live indoors, my dog, on the other hand is not allowed on the bed or the lounge chairs because she leaves a 'doggy' smell everywhere and she gets very dirty outside. I do treat my animals like people but common sense has to prevail sometimes! Thanks for stopping by ronnyb!

You're not strange. I'm also an animal lover, especially cats and dogs. I favour dogs more, though. Animals are like humans too, just that they have their own animal language. They also have feelings. We should therefore treat them like humans. Talk to them, smile to them. Who knows one day they might just talk to us in human language? LOL!

I am a cat person but I also have a dog and I love them all! I have wondered at times whether in a hundred years or so some pets may evolve to the extent where they could actually speak! Wouldn't that be amazing! It is important to treat them with love. Thanks for responding JudgeIronFist!

Hello paula, i know this is a lil bit late for me to comment on your post but i really want to ;) Yes i do treat my pets particularly my cat just like a human being. I talk to them most of the time, scold them if they are being naughty or noisy, bathe them play with them and i give them some of my time. Some professionals are telling me not do so, bacause its not the nature of pets to be treated that way, but if you ask me i think its a matter of choice for me, how i want me pets to live and how i want to enjoy my time with them ;)

You are a person after my own heart! I do things that some may consider strange such as taking one of my cats out to picnics etc, I get funny looks but quite frankly I think I am quite sane and see no harm in it; the cat doesn't mind! I love my pets and to me they are just like people. I think that if you are not harming anyone you can do whatever you like. We are happy and our pets are happy and that's all that counts! Thanks for responding setsuna, I appreciate it.

I talk to my animals always have. I do call them my babies sometimes..which annoys my mom and hubby..but they are loved and at times help me through stressful times..they deserve a treat for having to listen to me rave on about this and that..lol..nope your not strange. I bet at least 75% of the people here have talked to animals.

I agree. Cats can be better than a therapist sometimes! I went through a very difficult time for almost 6 years trying to conceive a baby ; it was a time of pain and stress and one of my cats was my therapy, that's for sure, he was the baby I could not have. It may sound strange to some but he is what got me through. He was not too happy when I did eventually have a human baby but he still gets a lot of my time! Thanks for stopping by mtdewgurl74!

Your not strange, paula. The people that have no life are the ones who are strange. I much prefer the company of animals to people. I talk to them all the time and actually understand what they are saying. People look at me strange when I'm talking to their dog or cat but I don't care. They are the ones complaining to me that their owners don't take decent care of them. If I get a strange look, I'll tell them to stop looking and start doing such and such for their pet. Then I get looks of disbelief. lol Ah well! I'll never understand people like I do animals.

I feel the same blackbriar. When I was ten my school teacher gave me a book as gift. It was a children's book about a girl reporter who could talk to animals and she would travel the world to interview them. My teacher knew me better than I did at the time because, as it turned out I do freelance writing and I love my pets! Hate to say it but I prefer animals to some people! Thanks for responding, I appreciate it!

Paula- No, you're not strange. Our Lightening is a part of our family. The children are affectionately termed "her boy and girl" when she's "mothering" them. She will groom our hair when sitting on the couch, and is spoiled just as much as our children. My little Sassy, rest her soul, was given the best of everything, and went with me everywhere I did. She even got her special treats "tacos" when we had them. Yes, she was a taco dog. She slept in our bed and always managed to end up right between us under the covers. (Lightening does the same thing and buries herself at our feet under the blankets). Our pets aren't just pets, they are part of our family. Namaste-Anora

That is definitely how I see my pets, they are like my children. I sleep with one of the cats. Come bedtime I jump into bed and call her; she will run to me from wherever she is and will snuggle up between us. They are all special creatures. Thanks Anora!

we treat our animals like they're people.we actually talk to them.we scold at them when they do something bad.we talk to them and tell them not to fight each other.we tease them.there is nothing wrong with treating your pets as furry "family members".

I can't help it! A lot of my friends smile at me and shake their heads...I love my 'babies'. We have a new kitty now because one of our old ones sadly passed away and the new kitten has been such a comfort to me that I take him almost everywhere with me and that does get a few weird looks! Thanks for the response my_name_is_coco! Hope you had a great Christmas!

We have one cat who is 11 years old. Our family wouldn't be complete without her. She is definitely pampered. She has special treats & kitty milk (specially formulated to prevent tummy upset). Her vet is a cat specialist. She has complete run of the house. She can go anywhere, sleep with anyone. She has never been one to jump on tables, counters and stuff. Mostly she just sits in whoever's lap is convenient. We do take her on vacations with us - she has separation anxiety and she could not tolerate being in a kennel. Sometimes we have a friend kitty and house sit if we are going somewhere she wouldn't want to go or if we aren't going by car. She doesn't like to ride well enough to take her around town. She is treated differently because she is a kitty and has different needs. But we attend to those needs as closely as we do the rest of the household members.
