Should a Kid follow his dreams or forget about baseball?

Well, my son is going to be attending the University this Fall ,and he will be living on campus in a dormitory. His plan is to complete a nursing degree. Well, he also loves to play baseball ,but since we are from a very small town nobody has noticed him enough to recruit him ,or offer him a scholarship. He is an excellent baseball player ,but has lost a great deal of confidence because nobody has noticed his talents. He is a natural player ,and has wom many awards including the The All Tournament Baseball due to his great performance ,but he doesn't take steroids like the other high school players and he is not big ,and coaches usually noticed players who are heavier. He still wants to walk-in and tryout to see if he can make it ,but I don't want him to be dissappointed if they turn him down. Most people are encouraging him to become a walk-on because they believe that he has too much talent to give up. I heard that coaches don't really care too much about walk-ons. What do you guys think?

If you have a dream and have the ability to achieve it go for it!. Just because he's not big or whatever doesn't matter he will bolk up if he starts playing on minor league level's and coaches and (forgot the name lol) the porspect hunter people will notice his raw talent. He should contact a team send them his records of his stats and see what they say, most likely they will give him a shot and you never know he could grow up and be an all-star player one day:)... he should go for his dream while he's still young. I'm in highschool and really wish I have more effort into being on a sports team but w/ money troubles its not as easy. Because I am very good at sports and always wanted to play football or baseball but... i don't know mayb one day i'll tryout for the heck of it, good luck with your son I'm sure he'll do amazing!

Yes, I have been encouraging him to tryout because what counts is that you gave it a chance ,and sometimes our dreams can become a reality.

Hi Mirita, I don't know a lot about baseball having never played the game and only watched a few games in the major leagues, but if he's good he really should give it a try. As long as he realizes that it's not a sure thing that he'll make the team, things should go well but warn him not to be too disappointed if he doesn't. Blessings.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing since he has the brains to become a very successful nurse too. He is an honor graduate ,so he has many opportunities.

I think he should do everything he can to take his dream as far as possible. I can think of five famous baseball players currently in the major leagues who were walk ons. One guy even did it on a dare. He was a pizza delivery man and his friends dared him to try out. He did try out, and he made it! And if your son doesn't make it, the nursing career will certainly be there for him, and will be extremely rewarding. And maybe sometimes the real lesson isn't making the team, but trying out for the team. That alone could open up doors he doesn't expect.

Thank you for your feedback ,and I also think that we should follow our dreams ,but as a mom I feel that I need to protect him from harm ,but is really his decision ,and I believe that everything always happens for a reason. I will support him in whatever he decides.

Well, I live in a place where is full of politics ,and usually you get noticed if you happen to be related to somebody famous ,and his team didn't win too many games because most of the players were just average plus they had a terrible baseball program since the school in only concentrated in basketball and futball. They hardly had any equipment ,and most of the expenses were from the boosters.

I would say that you should let him tryout. It's better to try than not to try. I see that this discussion is 3 weeks old, so I am wondering if the tryouts have happened yet or not? As far as getting "noticed" sometimes the player and/or parents have to take things into their own hands and try contacting the colleges themselves. I think sometimes it is a game of chance and either a kid is lucky enough to have a coach that likes him and wants to promote him or sometimes they aren't so lucky. I know what you mean about the "politics", but if it's meant to happen, with a little bit of persistence, it will happen. If it doesn't happen, then maybe it wasn't meant to be. Baseball is definitely a hugely competitive sports. If you look at how many boys have the dream of playing in the "big leagues" and how many actually make it, you know that the chances are slim. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't let them try. We just need to also make sure they know that it's important to have a "back-up" plan. It's good to have dreams and go after them. But they need to be realistic about it too.

well, he is going to start college at the end of the month ,so the University is going to be announcing the tryouts soon ,so hopefully he'll walk in. He is planning on studying nursing ,so he'll be okay no matter what happens. I'll keep everybody informed ,and let's pray to God that whatever happens is for the best.
