Respect for one's opinion- is it becoming non-existant???

With the growth of many social networking sites such as facebook, myspace and especially mylot- does it seem as though it is getting easier for people to disrespect another persons opinions or beliefs? Day after day I log into mylot and always run across a discussion (controversial or not) where someone does not agree and begins to attack the creator of the discussion or any of its participants. This I will never understand. My understanding of mylot is it is a place to socialize with new people from all over the world, learn new things about others and other countries in the process, make a little money doing so, and sharing and creating friendships and views.-- NOT to disprespect one for what they may believe or disbelieve of our topics.
Why is it so hard for us to have a friendly difference of opinion?
What made me start this discussion is as I browsed for a topic of interest to participate in...I, yet again, came across a topic of interest that of course included someone with a difference of opinion- that instead of just stating that- started attacking the creator of the discussion- as I read this particular discussion I did not agree with the views of the creator or most of the participants- BUT- as I scrolled and read each response...I STILL rated all positive- for the mear fact that they all were brave enough to stand begind their belief- whether I agreed or not! Why do you think others do not treat mylot collegues as such???? Are you one who finds yourself being attacked in your posts? If so, please share with us why you think you were attacked?? and what was the end result??
Personally I always agree to disagree...but all the attacking as often detered me from even responding...so I just put in my ratings and move on. Now do I feel that is fair to the creator of the topic or to myself- no- but do I want to be attacked as well for having an opinion- HECK NO. Let me know what you think my fellow mylotter

Hi
nice discussion and topic
i do agree that mylot and other social sites are to refresh ur mind, express ur views with other people of World. share ur views and cultures( which might be differnt for differnt people. its to make friend, and it should be place to relax.
I do agree that differnce of opinion is always their and it must be shared and expressed nicely. but it should not be taken as personal and make it EGO problem, as u never know about culture , tradition , believes of people in differnt parts of World. And sure attacking other person for the sake of discussion is not at all healthy. i believfe that if u dont like any discussion, skip it and go for other one.
and if some one try to attack me, i simply ignore them
Take care

It just disgusts me that many people act like 5 year old with the name calling and all. I mean can't we all just abide by the "I respect you for your opinion and participating" state of mind???

You've got a lot of nerve starting a discussion like this.
How dare you expose us closed minded individuals who think our way is the ONLY way and curses to anyone that goes against our beliefs???
I'm going to hunt down each and every one of your posts and rate you negatively!!!
that will teach you!!!

..............JUST KIDDING!!!
I'm actually the guy that sometimes likes to wander the myLot community and poke sticks in the hornet nests.
I sometimes actually start discussions that I KNOW will come under attack.
But it opens up debate and gets people defending their point of view.
Plus it makes for a lot more interesting discussion than "what's your favorite pizza topping?"
Like I said, sometimes I'm purposely trying to invite attack, but I don't believe that someone who is just sharing their opinion but be attacked personally by someone who doesn't agree with them.
If you don't agree with somebody's opinion, state that you don't agree, state your opinion on the matter, and give reasons why you feel the way you do.
See what just happened there???..........you just opened up a friendly debate.
Maybe you can learn something from each other.
And if I can't rate somebody positively, I just don't rate them at all.
Anywho.........that's my 2 cemts..........HAPPY MYLOTTING!

This something I am disappointed about where certain topics are concerned. They are usually topices which would call upon the participants to give valued contribution no matter what their stance is. Too often though people feel that once we dnt see eye to eye then they ought to throw in some insults berate the person they disagree with.
It is sad that so many persons follow this trend. It speaks to the level of growing intolerance for each others views. I really love good debates and enjoy reading the post of those who may oppose my view. I always learn something new and develop more respect for the thought pattern of others. In the end I still never agree with them but the exchange must never hit the dirt.
I was attacked only once and its was the poster of the discussion which initiated the attack. Her friends followed suit. That was the case for all who opposed her views. Threads and threads of name calling and beating. That I believe was so sad as she had raised some salient points in her discussion. I was a young mylotter then. I simply asked to be excused and bade them farewell.
Mylotters ought to realise that these discussins sometimes turn up in search results and are beneficial to persons doing researches.

Exactly my point tjades- thanks for bringing it to light- In the end -- we may never agree- but why throw blows below the belt for it?.?.?

I encountered on comment from one of my response that i got a bit insulted from my response because it was said that it wasn't making any sense at all.and then the one who made the discussion lectured the commenter not to insult those who are responding, it didn't look quite healthy a bit.am not gonna that person that's for sure.@warmweatherwoman (2233)

Thats one of my main points- why do people push us aways from discussions for fear of a difference of opinion and retaliation for it-- when in reality- that is what mylot is all about- differences of opinion!

A lot of people dont seem to understand that just because you have a differ of opinions that it cant be polite and respectful. The trouble is too many people take things personally and feel like they are being attacked jsut because someone questions their opinion.
Drives me nuts, if we all had the same opinions on things life would be pretty boring, just agree to disagree and move onto the next topic or discussion.

My sentiments exactly polo. I mean it would be extremely boring if everyone agreed on everything- things would be quite monotone. I am glad for the many mylotters that know that the real meaning on conversation is to learn new things about subjects and people- and to respect the way everyone feels- no matter if we tend to agree with it or not.
