Next month will be the first vacation me and my son will have, literally away from home. As early as now, I have been preparing our things (yep, I am that excited), including portable strollers (the one I can easily carry on the plane), clothes, etc. Although I have prepared this early, I still am not sure what essentials I must bring for this vacation. My son is just 7 months old... and I will be travelling with my mom too. What can you advise guys? What's the best things I must bring with me, when travelling with a baby? And please advise me on those stuff that won't be too heavy on the plane.

My son was 8 months old the first time we took him in a plane. We actually took our travel system with us because with all strollers, etc they will gate check them, so it was actually easier to have the travel system with us so we could stow all of our other carry on stuff on it and not have to worry about carrying all of that stuff and pushing a stroller. Make sure you have plenty of formula for him or a pacifier. The action of sucking during take-off and landing will help him with the pressure changes.

I already have a foldable stroller. I hope that's fine already. I am not sure what to expect during a gate check. I actually thought a travel system composes of a stroller, a carrier, and a car seat. I haven't bought a set. However, I already have a stroller and a carrier. Am hoping to invest in a car seat next time. I don't have a car, that's why I thought it wouldn't be that needed. But now that we will be travelling, I might need one of those... or do we really need it?

I have a toddler son and I have been traveling with him, five times overseas and two trips in my home country. I would suggest the lightweight stroller that can be folded up easily. It would help if it has a basket or something to carry things on. You might like to bring a pop up lightweight travel cot. If you are bottle feeding you should take formula and bottles with you. If so you might need to have a sterilizer. I have one that can do two bottles. At airports when going overseas liquids most be in bottles of 100ml and placed in a transparent bag for inspection by security. You will need baby food and drink on the plane journey, some nappies and a change of clothes for you son. I hope that you will have a lovely trip.

I bought a little sterilizer that takes two bottles and it plugs into the electricity. It steams two bottles at a time. I have got a pot that holds three amounts of formula ready to put in the the bottle with the correct amount of water. I bought a very light to carry travel cot that pops up in seconds. I take as little as possible. I am an experienced traveler and my son has special needs so I need his medical equipment as well. Good luck with your packing. My son and I have been to Portugal in 2007, to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in 2008 and to South Africa in 2009. We only had a 15kg luggage allowance on that trip we did in 2008.

I am not familiar with those sterilizer tablets... and am not even sure if they are available in our local pharmacies. Anyways, my son is starting on solids. It is a good thing, coz I am sure to buy those Gerber meals in small bottles wherever we may go.

That's quiet a lot. My baby is bottle fed... so that adds up to the list. Will surely bring some baby bottles with me, although I am not sure how I can sterilize if we will be staying in a hotel. I am excited for our first long distance trip. But just imagining the things I must bring, it makes me dizzy already.

You're right. That's one of the best things of travelling. You get to buy new stuff!
