I'm thinking of learning a new language, maybe Spanish or Korean. Where's the best place to start?

I think the best place to learn a language is in a classroom. Books and tapes are all well and good, but they can't correct you, so if you get something wrong while you're teaching yourself you may never know. Not only that, but you learn languages a lot faster when you have human interaction because you have to figure out how to understand other people and make yourself understood.

I think I would agree with this option but it seems to be expensive. Have you tried online courses? Do you find them effective?

Sometimes you can find fairly cheap lessons in your area. It doesn't hurt to check. I haven't tried online courses personally... the only other language I learned was French, and that was in school.

I think the first thing you should do to learn a new language is to learn the basic pronounciation. After grasping the pronounciation, try to learn some simple words, phases, and sentences, then grammar. But don't forget to llisten to the tapes and watch moives. What's more important, use it as often as you can.

Signing up for a class (maybe at a local community ed center), or something online, or tapes or Rosetta Stone. But usually first in learning is just to build up some basic vocabulary.

I think the first step in learning a new language is to learn some basic vocabulary. Teach yourself how to say Good Morning, Hello, What is your name, ect. in the language you are trying to learn. The best way to learn a new language is simply to speak it with other people and you can't do this unless you know the basics! Most likely, constant everyday practice with this language will help you learn it a lot quicker than it would ordinarily take.

I would love to go to Korea to learn the language and the culture. I think this is the best way to learn.

the first thing I do when I want to learn a language is check the similarities and differences between the alphabets, and the sounds that correspond to each letter. After I have all of those elements down pat, I go for learning simple phrases that I can use everyday so that I can get into speaking the actual language. After that I try to learn more words more phrases, and more grammar so that I know as much about the language as I possibly can. While doing those things, I try to research the culture, in what parts the language is spoken, and look at the different dialects of the language. (all this stuff takes a really long time) other people probably have a simpler way of doing this.

Learn Korean! haha.. well, my interest in Korean language came after listening to K-Pop songs and watching their tv shows. When I decided to learn it, the first site that I went to was KBS World's website, where they have this section called "Learn Korean". I learn mostly from there

I would suppose the first things you could do, when learning a new language, would be get some language books or tapes. I think I heard the program Rosetta Stone could help you learn languages. It just depends on what you're wanting to do.
