Selling Scrap Gold?

So, there have been some ads on tv for selling old or broken jewelry to scrap gold places. And just the other week, a place that will buy it from you opened up in the mall in my city. So I guess this is getting more common or something. So have you ever done this? Do you think this is the best way to get money for something like that or would you be better off selling it another way? Have you had any experiences with this?

I've never sold any gold personally, but I think the way to do it is to go in with a price already in mind. Do some research first, and don't just take whatever they're offering. It's good that people on this discussion realize mailing your gold off sight unseen and accepting any payment isn't wise, but people will cheat you in shops just as readily so you need to be prepared. Also, you might want to hold on to that gold because inflation is widely predicted in the near future...gold's probably the commodity that best holds its value through inflation.

That's probably good advice!
