The truth about salvation is found in God's Word--the Bible. And the Bible says in Ephesians 2: 8=9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast.” Being religious is to strive to do good things, or to try to do all things for God but religious work will NOT bring about salvation. We must first be saved before we can do good works that will not be burned like chaff. Salvation brings about good works. Good works done with the objective of gaining salvation will only be burned like hay and will not please God.

The salvation of our souls maybe the ultimate kind of salvation. But while here on earth most people still needs salvation. Salvation from want. Wish everyone would stop wanting and start needing. Salvation from drudgery and broken dreams, slavery, and other bad situations. We are the once who can save ourselves but I think there are people designed to help in the salvation of human from illness be that of society or personal illness.

Only we can save ourselves; no one else can. That's reality. If you've committed a crime, for instance, you'll be sent to jail. And if you repeat it, you'll be sent to jail again for a longer period. But if you want to save yourself from being jailed, don't commit any crime. God is there to guide us so that we make good decisions. Personally, I believe that if you've done something really wrong, you've to face the consequences. Don't expect others to save you :)
