what do you do when an insect flies in?

catch it, kill it or ignore it? do you do different things with different insects? if it is a fly or a butterfly i catch it in a glass and put it outside (flies don't try to get out and butterflies seem to hurt themselves bashing against the window) bees and wasps seems able to find their own way out and chasing them isn't a good idea as they sting when they get scared.

Hi Jb. It really depends on the insect. I would do as you do with a butterfly or moth, but when it is spiders, ants, mosquitoes, or flies, bees, etc., I...um...squish them. I've even had a couple of birds get in, which finally flew out a window I've opened, and once, a bat. Ack! That flew out, too lol. Karen

Bats eat a lot of mosquitoes, which I think is good, because some of the mosquitoes in the states here carry diseases.

hiya, i hate it when birds fly in - they get so scared they must really hurt themselves bashing against things. not had a bat yet though (i like bats, then again there's not many animals that i don't)

I do different things with different insects. If they are the harmless type, I'll catch them and take them outside. Flies, I'll kill. We live in farm country. There's a horse farm down the road from us and a cattle farm across the road. They attract flies... thousands of flies! These flies are MEAN, too! They bite and bite hard! I have fly traps outside, hanging from trees that are not too close to the house because they stink! Whew! I have to change them about every two weeks because they get filled up quickly! Yes, we have a lot of flies around here! Spiders, too, I kill. That's because I had a severe allergic reaction to a spider bite, got blood poisoning, and I NEVER want to to through that again! I let the spiders outside live, especially because they kill and eat bugs that destroy crops. I have my veggie garden, fruit and nut trees, strawberries and berry bushes and want every bad bug kept FAR away! My stuff is all organic. I do not use pesticides on them so I'll use every natural method possible to keep the bad bugs away, even allowing the spiders to take up residence around my garden. Ants are also prevalent around here. I have no problem killing those who happen to wander into my home. If I see where they're getting in, I sprinkle red pepper across their path. They won't pass it. Cinnamon works, too.

Yep, those flies are called horse flies here, too. Those nasty, big ones! I had one land on my arm once, right on the inside of my elbow, right on a vein and bit within a second of landing there! I couldn't believe how fast and how hard they bite! It zoomed right in on that vein, too. That's why I'll kill any that get inside the house and keep as many as possible away from the house. Whatever those fly traps have inside them, although extremely stinky (which is why I put it about 30 feet away from the house), they really seem to LOVE because, if they come near the house, they seem to head right for the traps instead of the house. I wish we had no poisonous spiders here but, from what I've read, there are four different kinds in this area. The Brown Recluse and Black Widow are the two that I can remember. I'm not sure about the other two but do know that one of them is quite small which is why I'll kill any spider I see inside the house, or if it's an exceptionally large spider, get my husband to kill it. LOL Thank goodness we don't have tarantulas around here! I'd go berserk if I saw one in my house!

those biting flies are horrible - do you call them horse flies in the states too? i let spiders alone (unless they're scaring visitors, then i catch them and put them somewhere else) because they eat flies, we don't have poisonous ones here. if we did i think i'd catch them very, very carefully (with a net or something) and stick them outside a good distance away.

tarantulas - evidence that not all small furry animals are extremely cute.

I would save the butterfly for sure as they are so beautiful.Bashing it is a sad thought. As for the fly's ,I kill them,As you know they sit on $hit! This is enough for me to know to kill the darn things.Bee's are pretty cool if you do not bother them. Its the people that start getting crazy swatting that typically get bit. They have landed on me and not bothered me,why would I hurt something that does my garden good.

If my husband saw a fly sit on something he would throw it out right away. Even if it was his favorite food. They carry a lot of germs we don't want in our bodies.

i leave the window open and hope it flies back out. i really don't like to kill things if i can avoid it.if it's a bee and it won't leave,i may have no choice though.my bro's allergic to them.

it depends on the insect, it it's something that can sting, then i catch it and let it out, if it's harmless, i let it be and my cats end up catching it and eating it. my main concern with insect is the safety of my cats because they chace everything that moves, so i'd hate to see them get hurt by a bee. never had a wasp or buterfly flying in though...

that makes sense. lot of butterflies get in here but they often don't seem to figure out how to get out again that's why i catch them. a cat i had used to sometimes eat moths and butterflies and sometimes kill them and leave them on my bed as a little gift...

Hi jb, Mostly, i would ignore it. But it disturb me, i will flap it or chase away it with newspapers or something like that. Killing is always not my first choice, as insect also have lifes. What i kill mostly is the pests, such as mosquito. As to bees and wasps, i will ingnore them too, as chasing them or flapping them isn't a good idea, just like you said. Happy mylotting!

To be honest with you, bugs are ok with me.......but....here in Texas, everything really is bigger. Really. We have these waterbugs (roaches) that are about 4 or 5 inches long, and scare the crap out of me. They fly too. I can't get close enough to catch it and set it outside, I can't swat it because it flies at me, and you can't spray it without retaliation. Yeesh.

cockroaches and flies are pests. flies in particular spread disease - not good house guests

Oh I always have this problem because I need to let my dog out to do business, when I open the door, the flies just fly in and out so I find flies in my house frequently, I will catch them when I get a chance. Depend on what insects, I might release them outside or just kill them, actually I am not the one that take care of it because I am not a big fan of insects.... my honey will take care of it.

flies like to stay and trample all over your food, unlike the others they never seem to want to leave...

It's simple - i open my windows or door to make them out of my house. Reason:Flies - means something smelly in my house. Find it first. Butterfly - i don't want it to go near my ceiling fans (it surely does and die tragically) bees and wasps - scary!!!

Ducked, avoid and run to the doors and windows. Then open all of them and wait for it to fly out! Nature is for us to cherish not destroy.

that must be an unfortunate phobia to have because there are so many insects around.

When it is a butterfly, I keep it in a glass jar and then let it go free outside. If it is a fly, beetle, bee, or wasp of any kind, I try to kill it, even though sometimes they may be very elusive. I only kill them because they are extremely annoying.

i'm not that bothered by beetles and wasps but flies really get on my nerves.

i would not kill big insects because they could be a father or mother or going to have babies.I would kill small flies but not small butterflies or something like that but if you have allergies I would ask someone else to kill it 4 you or catch it
@jb78000 (15139)

that makes sense, you don't want to go anywhere near a bee or wasp if you're allergic

I tend to ignore things like butterflies, moths, flies, mosquitoes but quite recently where i am in Australia i have been noticing these bugs that look like giant mosquitoes but coloured red and have a long barb-like stinger on the end of their body. With those "Critters" i normally just get the closest thing that looks like fly-pray and coat it till it's white and glossy although im not sure that Mr. Sheen in a can will kill it.

I use to love catching butterflies when I was younger. But if a butterfly happens to get inside the house I will try to get it to go outside. I don't mess with wasps since they sting. Flies and mosquito flies in all the time. I try to kill them with a fly swapper or anything that is near to kill it with. There is a fly flying around me now as I type this. I'm going to pick up the magazine and swat it.

i use a glass and a bit of paper to catch one that i want to put outside. flies and mosquitoes are pretty annoying.
