the scribes and Pharisees asked this question to Jesus as it was mentioned in Luke 5:33-35 ( 33 ) And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? ( 34 ) And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? ( 35 ) But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. it is obvious in these verses that fasting is the opposite of eating and drinking, hence when you are eating and drinking you can no longer consider yourself in fasting, this a very simple Logic and doesn't require philosopher. what should be realized after reading these verses ? 1 - fasting ( without eating and drinking ) was the common practice by the disciples of John the Baptist, let's not forget that Jesus Himself was baptized by John the Baptist. 2 - the followers of Jesus are supposed to fast ( when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days ) and since the followers of Jesus are supposed to fast according to the above verses, here is my questions to Christians: Do you fast ? If yes, tell me How do you fast ? and if no, Why ? Do you eat and drink while you consider yourself fasting ? What is the base of your fasting in your holy Book ? Thanks in advance , and best regards

Luke 5:33-35 (New International Version) Jesus Questioned About Fasting 33They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking." 34Jesus answered, "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast." Is fasting a command or a personal matter for each of us to decide how and when? I will do some research and post later.

Hi Gordano, it should be noted that Muslims all over the world will celebrate the Holy month of Ramadan, after a week Muslims will start Fasting from sunrise to sunset every day during the Holy month of Ramadan, and no drinking or eating is allowed during those times, Fasting is a special act of worship that is between a human and God only, since no one else can know for sure whether or not we are actually fasting. God says, in Hadith Qudsi, "Fasting is for Me and I only will reward it." In another Hadith, Prophet Mohammad (SAW) has said, "If one does not give up falsehoods in words and actions, God has no need of him giving up food and drink." Happy new Ramadan for all Muslims :)
