TV advertising who do they think they are selling to?

I remember when I was younger that when an advert came on TV it was usually instantly recognizable and would be very obvious which product it was promoting. Many of which still stick in my mind today such as Leonard Rossiter advertising Cinzano or any of the ads for Persil & Fairy Liquid.
But these days’ adverts seem to be mini productions telling a story yet never promoting the product until the last second when the name will be blasted on the screen. I often wonder what some of these advertising guru’s are on when they come up with the adverts and why companies pay so much for such unmemorable rubbish.
Does anyone else wonder why so many big companies fork out for advertising which rarely gets their product or brand out there?
