How do you patch up with a girlfriend after a fight?

Do you take an initiative to patch up with your girlfriend after a fight or she takes and you just respond on her initiative. Many a times its just a sort of normal fight and we are angry on each other do you remember the fight for a long time and dont forget what lead to the fight?
