How much time do different countries deserve?

Australia is a huge country so most people think they need to spent at least a couple of months seeing it but they make the mistake of trying to see all of New Zealand in a week or two. It is a small country but there is a lot to see. If you went to a country called ........ how much time would you like to spend there?

Tourists normally have a week or two at most to spend for holidays except for students and teachers who have summer vacations and retirees besides considering the budget. Each country has its own people, history, festivals, delicacies, and sites and sceneries to offer that cannot be enjoyed in just one short visit. Take for example a mountain resort, snow-covered in winter and full-bloom flowers in summer would be 6 months in between. Fruits harvested in abundance in their seasons would be missed when out-of-season. Whatever country, except places like the Sahara Desert or the North Pole where nothing much changes all-year round, I would like to stay for at least a year and go through one seasonal cycle, even get to learn to speak the local language.

I am a primary school teacher. At the moment I am at home because I have a baby girl that was born in June. When I worked full time in teaching I had free time in the school holidays: in July, August, October, December, January, March or April and May. I have covered some teacher's maternity contracts then gone on a long trip overseas when it ended. Like when I was 29 my trip to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Thanks for your excellent response Timothy.

Fifteen days sounds a great idea for most countries. Maxine

It depends a lot more on how I feel than of the country, Maxine. Sometimes I get homesick, sometimes I´d like to stay forever. And diferent places appeal in a different way to each person. I think I could go many times for a long time to Ciudad de Mexico and, in fact, I have gone 3 times (the last one for over a month) and I haven´t got tired of it or found there´s nothing more to see. A wonderful city is like a good food: you can eat it many times and you don´t tire of it. I have gone 3 times (or is it 4?) to Frida Kahlo´s house in Coyoacán, Ciudad de Mexico. But it seems my eyes and my mind don´t get tired of looking at every detail. I could go on for a long time. It happened to me in Italy and in the South of Spain. A friend of my daughter told her that Ciudad de Mexico could be seen in a couple of days at the most. There was nothing to see. Fortunatly my daughter asked us before going. She took with her a list of "musts". None of them were malls Hug

I spent 10 months in Australia the first time I went there. Then the second time I visited just one state and spent 2 months there.
