Do you care that Geocities are going away?

A few weeks ago, I recieved an email from Yahoo stating that Geocities (their free webhosting) is going to close in October. Basically, the notice was trying to sell me Yahoo hosting at eight dollars a month. Now, I am not really interested in transfering my Geocities sites to Yahoo hosting. They get very little traffic. And they look like a blind monkey put them together (geocities site building tools had a lot to desire). My blog gets more traffic, and serves the function that the website was supposed to (serve as a web presence for myself and the Golden Dawn lodge I belong to). Therefore, I seen no reason to pony up the money to transfer my pages opver to Yahoo hosting. I have decided that I am just going to let them disappear. So is there anyone that is going to care when Geocities completely disappears?

I had a small page but it was more just for playing around with than actually having a purpose.

The first time I set up a page there, it was just goofing around. Later, I redesigned the page for a specific purpose (and it failed miserably in hindsight).

The design tools are definitely user-UNfriendly.

I dunno it was harder to set up than I thought & if you didn't work on it everyday you forgot how to do stuff.

-smacks head against desk- I totally forgot about my geocities website that I had set up back in 2002 and now have no clue how to find it since I've changed ISPs and emails numerous times since then. I don't even remember what all I had on it. Have no clue why I had completely forgotten about it but I remember having fun setting it up. Guess I'm not gonna care about Geocities once they are gone since I forgot all about it years ago.

It was fun setting it up the first time. It was the first site I set up. But since then I have discovered much better ways to do things. Geocities is quite frustrating compared to the tools that I am using with the Office Live site (the lodge's stie). Of course, that is one of the reasons I think Geocities is disappearing; all the competition has better tools to do the same thing. I have copies of all the pages I had up, even if some of them are only Pdfs. The trick would be finding them. Myself, I still using the same two email addresses that I started out with eight years ago. I don't switch providers because it is just too much work to update everything.

not really..but i have a few friends that are bumming about having to switch. one of my friends has been locked out of her geocities site for over a year-she lost her password, and they said they can't help her.that alone made me not want to go with them.

um.... not really. And I think you're right.... our blogs, free sites and other posting/ hosting sites can spread our word well enough.

Well, in my case, my blog within the first couple of weeks was doing a better job than my geocities website. That was one of the big reasons, I just simply quit updating my geocities site.

I don't really care .But in the early days in internet Geocity was the only medium to make a free website. Now there are lot of sites to make free websites so doesn't really matter that much.

I've never used geocities myself, but a few of the sites that I have been on have been hosted by geocities and it will be sad to see them go.

I care. Or I should say I did care. I have a family web site that I made on there a few years back. I had no idea until I saw this post that they are closing their free service (although I'm not surprised). Thanks to you I made sure to save any pages and pictures I want to keep. That way I won't lose them completely when yahoo closes geocities down for good.

Yes, I am sad to see Geocities go. When I first started using the internet, I created my first website using Geocities because that's the site most of the people I knew used. I liked how easy it was to create pages with Geocities. Mainly I used my site to share photos I had scanned and also to display some of my creative writing. I kept my pages relatively unchanged over all the years they were up, though I did add a few things to it from time to time. It was always nice to look at my Geocities site because it was like going back in time; it reminded me of my first year or two as an internet user. Now that Geocities is gone I feel like part of my history is gone. Fortunately, they gave us plenty of time to back up all our files before they took Geocities down. I won't be using Yahoo hosting because I think they charge too much.

Well, it sure is sad to see such a historical part of a hosting company, and one of the oldest free hosting at its time come to an end. Basically, when Yahoo bought it, they were trying to find a way to monetize it,as they couldn't afford to give out free hosting to so many people. I guess they couldn't find a way to make it profitable, so now they will close it and recommend people for their paid hosting, which I really think is not really great. There are other sites out there that have free hosting now, such as the popular Wordpress and Blogger, and I am sure people will find alternatives, but again ,it is sad to see a piece of history disappear.
