I'm a crafty person. Have been all my life. Always looking for new crafts to make. Well the other day when I was looking for a craft for my grand daughter, I noticed a set where you made bracelets out of paper...folding it just the right way. I couldn't believe it... now someone is making money for something us old folks did for fun way back when we were kids while we collected all the supplies on our own! Do you remember making bracelets and necklaces out of the long gum wrappers (like Juicey Fruit or Stripes)? You opened the wrapper, folded each long side into the middle then folded it in half, Then folded the long strip in half, opened it back up and took each end and folded it to meet in the middle, then folded the whole thing in half again. Then you took another one folded this same way and slipped it into the "loops" of the first wrapper and it made a V shape. You just kept adding folded wrappers into the loops and made it as long as you liked, and then used a folded wrapper to connect the ends. Do you remember collecting gum wrappers? Grabbing them if someone dropped them on the ground.. asking every one to save them for you...fighting over who got the wrapper? And then when you got good and realized you could do it... you'd make sure to saved the silver paper inside wrapper and made that wonderful, cool "silver" bracelet? To get those silver ones made us happier than Charlie when he got the golden ticket!! And to wear a "silver" necklace to school... Brittney Spears didn't have it so good!! It was hard for me to collect many as we weren't allowed to have gum much, but I'd ask other people to save them for me and my eyeballs were always on the look out for stray wrappers! I am talking the 60's here so some of you might not know what I am talking about... it is a great craft and alot of fun....and they still have long sticks of gum...so get with the program!!! I still don't chew much gum..(my grand daughter does, but last night she was chewing gum and it pulled on of her fillings out of her teeth!) but you could just make your own pattern and cut printed papers to make the "gum wrappers" and do the folding. Also helps with the creativity for kids, the coordination and hand-eye connection.. and just lots of fun Do you remember? What was your longest you made? DId you get to make a "silver" one? Memories are just the best thing ever, aren't they!

I remember making bracelets out of clover blossoms in the summer. Does that count?

LOL I don't think I ever done the gum wrapper bracelet thing, but we used to make them out of wire and any bead we would find. However that sounds like a great activity to do with my kids at school. As you say it doesn't necessarily have to be real wrappers but just folding cut paper. Is there a site that teaches how to do it? I would like to learn.

We girls thought it was just the greatest thing ever! The boys just made lengths long as they could - for boys it was who had the longest "rope" of gum wrappers. Us girls... use it wisely and made jewlery!! But you got me... what is gimp? I am guessing it is something I know of, but probably just going by a different name.....

I remember doing that as a kid. I was one of the guys and was making one of those really long ropes. I used it to wrap around my softball and glove to help the glove conform to the ball better for when I was playing. Don't know that it did that much good. Kept it out of the way though.

Now that you mention it, they were rather a strong little wrapper rope! But you had the right idea... you tried! I bet it did help! And you were one that made it useful. That is a good story!!
