Tithing.... a new statistic I heard today.

90% of Evangelical Christians say they haven't ever stolen. only 3% tithe. How do they think that keeping money from God is NOT stealing? Why do you think giving to God is so low? I mean, Christians, we trust God with our souls, but not our money... which can be lost, stolen, burned, ripped.... hm. your thoughts..

The Church having money is important but I do not believe that people should be forced to give a set amount. In my Church we have Stewardship. This means that people can give of their time and talent to the Church - it doesn't have to be money alone that will build up God's Kingdom. The people who clean th Church or stiff envelopes or collect clothing for the poor, or cook food for he homeless are giving in a real sense. It is just not the rich that can give to the Church. We all give in different ways. I do not give so much on monetary terms but am spending a lot of time collecting bedding for a home for mentally challenged teenagers and also deliver food to the homeless. We do what we can - this is what I think that is important.= - the giving. What do you think about what I have said. I would be interested as I am not an Evangelical Christian but a Christian.

I think you have the right idea! Tithing was an old testament requirement, and it involved far more than just money. Much of it went to feeding and clothing the priests and the upkeep of the temples. If one has it, giving money is the easiest part. Living one's faith through helping as you and many of us do just may mean more to God than all the money in the world. It is the heart, the spirit, which he and he alone can judge, and God is just and loving. Keep on doing your wonderful work.

The idea of a tithe is Old Testament law and if we are Christians, we are not under the law. Paul said that every man should give according as he determines, not as the law tells him he has to. Calling people liars because they haven't given tithe is not very Christian like. We give because we want to, not because we have to, and how much, when and where, is between each of us and God, not each of us and our church.

Thank you for responding. To clarify: the statement wasn't from me, I was quoting. Secondly, you just stated that Paut said EVERY man should give ... something. If a Christian is following that teaching alone they should be tithing, or giving monies to the church for the church to designate use of. If a Christian is not tithing, then they are stealing from God. They are keeping what He has requested of them. Forget the amount. That was never part of the discussion. It's a principal of not giving to God. If we are bought by His blood, then EVERYTHING we have is His, including our very lives. His Word says that every good thing comes from God. I would put money in that category. Time. Talents. Children If people say they are Christians and don't give to God what He asks, no matter what it is, it is wrong, it is sin, and they are stealing. If they say they have never stolen anything (and aren't tithing) then they are also lying. We don't like to hear that, but there's the facts. Thanks for writing.

God wants your goodwill, your faith and your recognition that he is beyond anything that we can imagine. He wants you to take care of yourself and of others, but I cannot imagine that he has ordained anyone to give to the Church itself. Every good you do is for God, then why do you have to pay a Church? In my opinion, a Church is a place of worship that needs to be kept up, but a donation elsewhere and clothing/feeding your child is much more important than having a pretty house of worship. Give what you have freely, but don't oblige others to give because a donation that is forced is not a donation given for God... and nothing is given to God, except your devotion and your goodwill. He has no need of your money, he can create whatever he needs. He needs to know that you care for others in his name.

What a great discussion and as Christians we should have faith in God to trust him when it comes to finances. I suppose people see their finances getting stretched, especially in the current financial climate and then look to cut back where ever they can which by those statistics also means tithing instead of trusting their faith. I also wonder how many actually give a tenth of their earnings as a tithe or chose what ever percentage they feel comfortable with.

I'm curious on your last comment: do you think that the 10% is the MINIMUM for us? I feel like all 100% belongs to Him if I belong to Him. I wonder how many give more than the OT 10%. I do agree that people are being stretched. I lived our first 12 years of marriage that way... I think that when you are stretched, that's the BEST time to give. It's backwards, but most of Christ's teachings are backwards to the world's way of thinking. :*) I can say that when we did make choices to pay bills over tithing, we lost even more! I kid you not! When we tithed THEN paid bills... we always had lights on and food on the table. It was Hamburger(less) Helper, but it was food! God is good and I personally testify to His faithfulness when our family tithes. Thanks for your response!

Hello Bear. In Old Testament times, people tithed much more than just their money, as some really had none. They gave 10 per cent of their crops, their animals, and sometimes even gave a child to work in the temple. Yet today, many Christians think in terms of only 10% of their monetary earnings when it comes to tithing. Only God can know one's heart and spirit, as to whether they are returning unto him all that they can or should. Karen

What is tithe? and what does God want with your money? Where is this donation going? I give money to the poor in the name of God? does that count? Do you give it to your church to make it prettier or is it given to people with hardships? I trust Gods, but not necessarily other people who collect in His name.

I am a Christian and I will tell you the truth. Read Deuteronomy 14:22-29. It explains tithing. You will see that what is being taught as a tithe is not really a tithe at all. In the new Testament, we are taught how to give. Let the Spirit of God teach you the truth. Remember this, churches are businesses. They are almost all incorporated. They have administrative expenses. If you like your church and you want it to continue in it, then you need to support it. If you want to be a member and they ask for 10% of your income, then you need to agree to this before you become a member.

The only reason not to tithe is if you do not have enough to make a living, that is if you are poor, but even then you should make it up some other way like volunteering or perhaps just give a little. But 10 percent is not much compared to the 25 to 40 percent the government takes and the 10 percent helps pay for the minister's salary and also does the upkeep of the church. So if those who do not tithe wonder why their pastor does not preach a good sermon even though he wants to or the manse is falling apart or those poor people in the Sudan or in the Muslim countries are being persecuted, maybe it is because their church cannot afford to help because the members are too cheap.
