Are you nervous on the first day of a new job?

I am starting a new job next week and I am very nervous. There will be hordes of employess that will already be established in the company, and I find that to be quite intimidating. I feel like everyone will be judging me, and sizing me up. I am also nervous about learning the ropes at a new job. It is very nerve-wracking to go into a place without knowing the policies and procedures and exactly what is required of me. I can only hope that my new employer will appreciate my work, and I plan to give it my best shot. Any advice on how to calm my nerves and how to act on the first day of work?

Just be calm. In your first days, don't say a lot to people until you know whom you can trust. If you are a professional, just do your work to the best of your ability. It is the only way to quickly gain respect.

Oh ditto on this. Don't gossip with anyone yet :) There is drama in every office.. it's my "policy" to stay out of it. Most of the time, you can't 100% stay out of it, but people will try to talk you into their side as soon as the first day. Yuck! A former employee (at my new job) posted all this gossip about people right on my facebook wall. I was kinda mad about that! I had no idea my former jr. high best friend had worked there.

It's really okay to actually be nervous on your first day because you wouldn't know what to expect. just be patient and focus on the job. you are lucky among the many who didn't have jobs because of lack of job opportunities due to this recession..good luck

yah of course its really nervoes in every first time. first time in school, first time on that place, first time meeting with new people. how much more in your new job. you are going to deal with your boss, officemates, and of course your field of work. so just pray before leaving the house that everythings gonna be fine and smooth.

I know what you mean!! I'm starting a new job soon here, too, (OK - I actually start in a month, so I have plenty of time before I actually start it..) but it's definitely nerve-wracking! But I think you need to keep in mind that your supervisors are obviously going to cut you some slack if you make any mistakes - because you're new. You aren't expected to know everything when you walk in the door - you're going to get trained in. And if you have any questions or anything even after you get trained in, I'm sure you can just ask your supervisor or "mentor" or whatnot and they'd be happy to help you out. I know what you mean, also, about having to prove yourself before gaining respect. But to me, it's more of something to look forward to than dread. You should be excited to get to know the people around you, and to build a good image with your company! Think of it as new opportunities than something to dread. It's all about the mentality. My best advice? Well..Honestly, when I'm nervous - drinking water and taking big, deep breaths helps me calm down. It's weird, I know..But that's what I do. Otherwise, just try to be super friendly and eager to learn! And I'm sure everything will go GREAT. Good luck! And congrats!

Congratulations on your new job! I just started a new job a month ago. And, to be honest, it still feels new :) My best advice.. clarify, clarify, clarify. I was taught how to do a number of things, and my supervisor left out a step in most all of them, LOL. She has never trained anyone before, so nobody got upset with me or anything, but I keep saying "forgive me, I'm still learning!". I am always nervous on the day I start a new job! Granted, I don't do it very often. I say, if at the end of Day 1, you plan on coming back tomorrow, it's a successful first day! In the job I had before this one, my first day was so awful, I almost didn't show up Tuesday, so that's my new gauge. Good luck to you!

I don't think that you need to worry about that. There is no need to get nervous. When I had started my struggle three years ago,Still at that time I was confident as I am today, I have faced lot of interviews and 3-4 jobs have changed. So as per my experience, you don't need to get nervous because whenever you go in new organisation, offcourse your seniors help you in your work, just do follow them and concentrate on the work from first day what ever you are going to do and give 100% output in your job and you will be appriciated surely by your seniors.

I have also been on tons of interviews, and I finally landed a permanent position. I will do my absolute best and give 100% in my work. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
