Where do you shop for your healthy foods?

Where do you shop for all of your healthy foods? Maybe it's an organic grocery store, whole foods, or maybe even just the regular ol grocery store. I'm curious because recently my husband and I move to a new state. In this new town we have a local, organic grocery store. I've been tempted by it since we moved here! Well finally today I went in to check it out. I couldn't believe how HIGH the prices were. My husband and I are both professionals and sadly I don't think we could ever afford to grocery shop there. The thing that got me was that I saw several items that the regular grocery store sell for less than half the price!! It's unfortunate because I'd love to shop there the prices just aren't at all reasonable. Unfortunately that was our only option for healthy/organic type grocery stores. I LOVE Trader Joes. Their products are great and so reasonably priced. Unfortunately we have one NO WHERE near us! :-(

To save money, I just go to my mom's vegetable garden. If not, I like going to this little market called Fresh & Easy. It's not big like a supermarket, it just has the basics like fruit, dairy, snacks, and meals to go. It's very convenient and I stop by when I come home from work.

I can't wait until my husband and I move next into a house. We'll then hopefully have a big enough backyard to start a garden of our own! It'll save TONS of money!

That's the spirit! I know from my experience that most of these "Organic stores" are a scam, over pricing and also sneaking in some regular one's as organic. It is good that you want a house with a garden. go for it! as soon as possible. There is nothing like your own product on your table.

That's too bad!! I would probably just shop at the grocery store if you ask me - it's unfortunate that you can't support your local economy by shopping at the local organic place, but what can you do? If you can't afford it, you can't afford it. I really like shopping at Rainbow foods (a local, big chain grocery store) and they actually have an OK selection, too.

Maybe you can find the local growers and get food direct from them. I do that sometimes where I live. Also, check safeway, or the other chains. Most towns have one and they will have an "organic" aisle. Not as good selection as trader Joe's, but probably worth a shot.

I always just go to the organic or health food section of my local Safeway. Trader Joe's is also good. As you mentioned, unfortunately, many of the local organic stores are super expensive relative to the big chains, and I don't have the money to spend.

I actually found a couple of local co-ops that sell weekly bags of organic produce from local farmers for around $30 a week. You get whatever is on the menu for the week, and it is usually around 4 or 5 different veggies and 3 or 4 different fruits. For instance, in a week, I may get a head of romaine lettuce, an eggplant, some heirloom tomatoes, a couple of grapefruit, some apples, an avocado, and some green beans or corn. You can buy different sized bags and then pick the closest drop-off location to you to pick up your groceries. The other co-op I recently joined delivers right to my door! It is the same deal: you get a few substitutions with both co-ops, but it is mainly getting what they offer for the week. I have found that this is much cheaper than buying at the local Whole Foods, which is mega expensive! I am also lucky enough to be within two miles of a Trader Joes!

I prefer to shop my healthy foods from the registered shops by the respective state departments. I need to be very caution on the health aspect. I usually buy once in a week in the registered shops and store in to the particular period of time.

I find this interesting. Where are you from? I don't think I've ever heard of state registered shops.

Whole Foods is pretty good. They get a great variety of organic produce, local produce and a nice variety of organic food to choose from. Other options are to see if there are any local farmer's markets... locally grown produce is very fresh and some much healthier than produce that was picked early and ripened while traveling cross country. You can also speak with the people selling the produce to see how they grow their products (I've found that most do everything possible to grow organically and many just don't have the organic certification). Check you local food stores for organic foods also, you may be surprised at what they offer. Good Luck!

i just buy in local supermarkets. in any supermarkets. they also have healthy foods. i don't go look for any more in health food stores as i used to . cause health foods are popular now and that they are carried in local supermarkets. like oats cookies, brown rice, vegetables, soya milk and fruit and natural juices. and so if we do some research on what our supermarket are selling we will be suprised that they are carrying enough healthy products around. and so though it is quite expensive too as those sold in health food stores. i find it more comfortable to buy in the supermarket. i have not eaten any red meat and pork for more than 2 weeks now. i eat chicken sparingly. i am more into health foods. and oats basically. so i think what i need to buy for a healthy lifestyle are offered or sold in my local supermarkets or any supermarkets that are big and popular.

I can't imagine life without Trader Joe's. I love it there. We get all of our produce at Sprouts/ It may be a Southern California chain. Not usre. The prices on the produce there are generally way lower than they are at the supermarkets or at Trader Joe's. Fortunately, I live close enough to Trader Joe's, Sprouts, and Von's to split up all of my marketing. That's the problem with a lot of the smaller stores. They simply can't compete with chain prices. I agree with previous posters. I think that I would just shop at the supermarket. Good luck finding an alternative.

I shop at the regular grocery store and look for things that are marked "organic." We also have a local farm market where you can buy directly from the farmer. My favorite is our local health food store which gives so many good discounts that it is much more reasonable than the other stores most of the time. Another favorite is our cooperative store. They allow you to buy healthy items in bulk and I have to pay for a membership but it is a lifetime membership and the quality of the healthy items is very good. If all else fails, I use the internet. Many of the herbal formulas and specialty products that I cannot get locally I purchase from the internet.

I just go to the local supermarket, i believe that vegetables can also be healthy just because they dont have a label saying ecological/organic. Especially when it comes to vegetables it is just a sign that they have gotten natural fertilizer from cow/pork/chicken instead of a regular fertilizer, and they contain the same things. And ofcause you know they havent used pesticides/herbicides on the field. But thats it. Though my local supermarket also have a large selection of biological foods, which i choose between especially when it comes to meat, then you know that the cattle has had large fields to walk on, and the chickens havent been in a small house with no room for movement.

When I want to eat organic foods( I don't alway, because of the high price) I shop at the supermarket in the organic section, prices are reasonable. If can't fine what I am looking for I will go to a speciality store such as Trader Joes. Unfortunately, in order to eat healthy foods we will see higher prices. It is shameful that it cost so much more money to purchase organic food to stay healthy, but that is the case not matter what city or state you reside in.

I also love Trader Joes, whole foods and Sprouts who all have natural wholesome food at decent prices. vons also has an organic grocery section its a little higher but they do have a lot of sales if you get a vons club card.this really does pay you to use. I like vons also and Mothers Kitchen too
