My father is the only person I know, other than myself, that likes to read? Do any of you myLotters read?? What kind of books do you prefer?? I read all sorts of books, I actually prefer a book that has something to teach me. For instance, novels are fiction but will be set during a war. Therefore, you learn about the war during the novel. Any good-read suggestions???

I am a avid reader I love to read. I usually read Stephan King who is my favourite author but Dean Knootz comes a very close second. If you haven't read any of his books I would highly recommend the Odd Thomas books I found them a very enjoyable read. Another author that I also enjoy from time to time is Richard Laymond. I do sometime read some true life stories about children/adults that have overcome the odds after suffering terribly at the hands of others.

I have never heard of the "Odd Thomas" books you refer to. What author wrote these books?? Dean Knootz? Also, what kind of books does Richard Laymond write??

I may recommend you various books under various categories... Regarding your view "to learn something.." The best possible work may be "The pillars of earth" and its sequel "World without end". The story is revolves around a builder and his family in poverty searching for work, and their unexpected stroke of luck when they are granted a church project. This plot is set in 13th century england. In the sequel, the story is about the descendants of the the builder that was the lead in the prequel. It is set in 16th century. What I like about these books is that their excellent, tear wrenching plots, that justifies the statement, "all that happens is for the good" For any reader the subject should not be limited to his/her preferences but one needs to explore as much as he/she can. I am compelled to also recommend "A house for Mr. Biswas" by V.S. Naipaul. It is an Indian novel similar to the subject of Slumdog Millionere. Among classics I may recommend you "All my love declared", "Resurrection" and "War and Peace", both by Leo Tolstoy. They are the best ones I have ever read. I would also recommend you "The count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas. It depicts the story of wronged man who bestows vengeance upon his culprits. To recommend you there are limitless options. It is impossible to cover such a vast subject such as reading in a matter of a few words. I recommend you to browse through the works of various authors from different fields and find the one which suits you the most. Best of luck. Regarding your father I can assure you that you are very lucky. Happy Lotting

I prefer reading horror novels and mysteries. I would suggest Carrie by Stephen King. Even though I knew the whole story and the ending before I even started the book, it was entertainment and suspense til the end.

I read a lot of Stephen King novels. They are horror/thriller books, not really anyhting that will teach you much, but I enjoy them. To me, they take me out of my reality for a while and I can plunge myself into a whole nother world.

Steven King novels will chill you to the bone! I own a few: Geralds Game, Needful Things, Bag of Bones, and, my all-time favorite, The Shining. But sometimes it seems like his writing just draggs out for me. I own a few of his movies too. Rose Red and The storm of a Century are the only two I can think of off the top of my head, but even the movies seem to drag out. It just seems to me that he could include all the detail in less words. I suppose for some people, this would build the suspence or terror? What do you think???
