Produce: buy or grow

Would you rather grow your own produce, buy at a farmers market or buy at a grocery store? With all the chemicals and processes I would feel safe to grow my own, plus it will be much cheaper...... though I live in town and I can't grow my own for no yard space :(( i remember when i was little my grandma had a big farm and we would grow all kinds of fruits and vegetables and i would work with her during the summer on her own vegetable stand. back then i was upset because i wouldn't have a summer, now i like what she did and respect her for it. even though i would pick strawberries, i think i ate just as many as i picked....haha it was fun, enjoyable and you got to meet many people. i always remember canning also....my grandma still does that.

Hi charblaize, At my hometown, we used to grow our own vegetables and fruits because we have a small farm there. We have fruits tree like banana, rambutan, durian and a few more. It is very exciting when this fruits season came. We can ate as much as we want to. And we ate it fresh. If we have extras, we can sell it at the local market.

rambutan - This is rambutan.
I came form Malaysia. Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is a hairy fruits while durian is call the "king of fruit". I can't explain about this two fruits but I provide you the link. This two are famous in South East Asia countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambutan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

If I could, I would prefer to grow my own. It would be great to have a garden to eat from, all those fresh and delicious homegrown vegetables such as tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, bell pepper. Yum! They do taste best that way. If I can't grow my own, and I can't since I live downtown, a Farmer's Market would be great, if I had a car and drove that is. So I will settle for whatever the market has because that is what is available to me. I do try to wash them off very carefully though before eating. I do love vegetables and fruits!

yes, it takes some situations to get a garden or go to a farmers market so the store/market is the only choice we have. I know what your talking about and have some issues to have a garden myself. I would like to have fresh, natural foods also.

Why buy if we can grow and produce but what made us lazy to do so sometimes we don't have enough time or we don't have a piece of land to have it done. I remember I really enjoyed going to our home town where vegetables and fruits are just being given by relatives and friends. We do enjoy eating young coconuts and harvesting crops. Really it's fun having a little farm or even a vegetable garden.

i know this world has become the rush rush and I feel we all need to take time and remember what the Lord has given us to use for like our fruits and vegetables and slow down alittle bit....i just might get things ready for next year and have my son help me also.....he loves the outdoors and I had him in 4-H this year, he may just find something else to enjoy.....

I prefer to plant my own vegetables, because the treatment can be controlled and it is definitely more healthy, or buying from the farmers. by buying from the farmers can further increase economic growth.

i agree with everything you said.....help the economy and local farmers...that is what we need along with natural healthy foods.

I grow a small garden every summer - sometimes I get more from it than others, but the veggies I grow definitely taste better than anything I have bought in the grocery store. Farmer's markets are great too - but when I have no option - I have to go with the local grocery store. The veggies there aren't terrible, but any of the tree fruits (Peaches, nectarines, plums ) are usually not so good.

Next spring, i plan to put in a garden. I was getting the land cleared off this year, and did not have much of an opportunity to do gardening, with all the work that we have had to do. I believe growing your own vegetables, is healthier, and tastes better also. We have canned a lot of food this year, most of it came from other locals gardens.

You're lucky to still have your grandma! Lots of people with no yard space have containers. My dad can't handle a garden anymore so he got a 5 gallon bucket and put a tomato plant in it and it's producing like crazy--he's very happy with it! No yard at all?! Not even a space for a pot? You could get a topsy-turvy and hang it from your window for tomatos. They have the instructions to make your own for free, too. I grew my first garden this year and most things didn't come up but I had a lot of green beans and they're still growing. I prefer to grow my own or go to a farmer's market. Things from the grocery taste funky for some reason.

My grandma likes to keep canning also which is nice. I rather have natural foods but its hard to grow what i like with no area. I don't care for tomatoes but like to make my own spagetti sauce and simmer all day like my great grandma but it never tastes the same....hmmmm.....:)0

I'd love to live off the land! I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building and while there's the balcony for some minor gardening I might want to do, I've just been procrastinating. One of these days I'll get around to having a container garden there.

i have seen alot of those balcony gardening and flower beds...on TV, i don't live in a big city like that just a small rural community but in town and in a rental house and just have a front yard; so no where to put a garden, but I always could go to my inlaws or stepfathers to make a garden but then it would take gas money and all. just might to save on groceries...

I would LOVE to be able to grow my own produce. Unfortunately I just don't have the yard space right now to really grow a garden. One of these days though, when my husband and I purchase a house, we will have a garden and grow our own produce. For now i purchase my produce from the grocery store and farmer's market.

I prefer to grow my own produce so that I don't have to pay the potentially high prices plus this way I know that it is also fresh. I also enjoy canning certain items so that I can have them during the winter months.

This year we made a little garden and grew just veggies that we wanted and knew we would use. When we ran out of space we got some large containers to grow tomatoes and squash in. One thing about growing is you have to keep up with it, not just throwing seeds in the ground and letting it go. LoL. We actually had stink bugs infest some of our squash plants. I don't like to use pesticides, especially on something I plan to eat. So we did lose some to the little buggers. We don't have a local farmers market that I'm aware of so if we didn't grow our own we would buy it from the grocery store. Like during the winter we don't have a heated green house or any proper area in the house that we can grow, so we have to buy from the grocery store. Someday I hope to have a green house so it's possible to grow year round. My mother and step father built one and that's what they do. I love going out to the garden and picking something to use for dinner. :D Hope your having a good day. :)

Yes the only bad thing is keeping up the garden and keeping the bugs and weeds out. Though that would be good exercise and have more fresh air outside and may get my son to help next year....

You can grow a bunch of stuff on your deck it is easy and you will have a lot of fun with it. Plus I think it is easier to grow them on your deck or balcony.

i don't have a deck or balcony, i live in a small house in town (rental) with just a front yard. I have a flower bed and may even think of planting a few rows of this and that next year or go to my in-laws or step-dads and make a big garden, then it would take me alot of gas to go back and forth to keep it up and care of it, but I might try something and even start canning so i will have vegetables and stuff for the winter. I don't like to drive in winter either...

I would love to grow my own, but I am not very good at getting around to the work of actually making a garden area in my yard. The most I have ever done is grow a mint plant and tomatoes in my Aerogarden. I end up buying most of my produce at the grocery store, but when I am able to go to the Farmer's Market I like to get things there even though it is more expensive.

the only thing we get right now from a farmers market is the sweet corn, yet it is soo expensive and went up from when i got back in school from 50 cents a dozen to 2.00 a dozen!!! i get mine from the grocery store also...sometimes it is too expensive also.
