My uncle has a plastic case he bought for his camera so he can take pictures when he is at the pool with his family. He got some great shots of my cousin underwater. The camera was totally protected and the case wasn't that cheap. I think you can find it at the place where you bought your camera. Good luck

I have a Canon G9 and have a special case to take underwater photos. The camera has an underwater setting for sharper photos. The case has a flash defuser on it so you can take picutres at a deeper depth. Make sure you check the rating of the case. Many small point and shoot camers will be able to use a common photo bag designed for under water use.

I don't know if you are using the digital or film camera.
I am in Australia, Ihave seen in the shops, disposable underwater cameras.
When you have used all the film, take to the photo processors, and get the films back, back as digital takes over, more and more, this may no longer be the case.
It was only a few months ago, I saw the disposable underwater cameras.
The other persons statement that most cameras are watertight is against my own teachings, they are light proof, not waterproof, very different.
I would never emerse any camera, film or digital in water without a protective case.

I have seen realatively cheap cameras that can easily go underwater 5 to 10 feet, but I imagine that to go any deeper, you would probably have to either find a way to completely protect your camera from any possible water leakage, or buy more expensive equipment that is specially designed for underwater photography.

Basically every camera can be used for underwater photography, as long as you go in the normal deep ex: in lake or river, or may be when you are snorkeling. But if you go deeper in the ocean with diving equipment, I'm afraid you must take special underwater camera because of the water pressure can break your ordinary camera. In your case, you said that you only want to take picture on the river, so you can use ordinary camera, but you must add special underwater case or waterproof case. It's common accessory for water connected photography so the price are not very expensive, just about $ 100 or lower (based on the quality and brand) you can have your own underwater camera case.
