They had a lil dealie on the table w/ a reminder of all our benefits. One was 401k & for part time employees.... I was thinking OMG that's COOL! I've been there long enough to qualify. Turns out I went online to look for more details and I have to work a minimum of 20hrs a week/1000 hrs a yr. WTH? There were weeks I was only working 4hrs, I average about 9-13.... I have no say in how many hours they give me. I work the 20 when given them but I can't work them if I"m not given them!
That just urks me!
It reminds me of the grocery store my half sister worked at. The store would have to provide medical insurance at 30hrs+ a week per the Union Contract. So she would only get scheduled 28 hrs so the store would't have to fork for medical insurance.

They do that so that they can say they provide benefits but they don't really have to do it. It's a common ploy with businesses, especially nowadays. When I worked part time they would short me at least an hour a week so they wouldn't have to pay any benefits--but I could buy the benefits from them for about half my paycheck!
It's going to get more and more common as businesses not only try to evade labor rules and laws but just struggle to stay afloat what with the new minimum wage and consumers holding tightly to their wallets.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a bad practice. But look at it from their point of view, pretend you're a business owner and do the math.
What kind of work do you do? I'd love to have a part time job, even 4 hours a week would help right now. There are no jobs here that I can physically do, I have to be able to sit down every few minutes at least.

It's retail. Sadly they have a ton of people and for most it's their 2nd job! Only a handful beyond managers are even full time. I wish they would let a person sit ones feet or atleast mine have such a hard time adjusting when I work such minimal hours ya know?!?! I dunno they claim the computer picks your hours against the store hours, hours available, hours alotted for that weeks payroll, particular sale ect. They have some crazy method to the madness.
I understand every business wants to stay afloat. That's why they only gave us 2% raises instead of 4% wich would of put me @ the wage I origionally would settle for. But alas when hubby works a complicated 3on, 4off, 4on, 3off & flip that around every 3mo's it's hard to find anywhere that will acommidate that. *sigh* Darn daycare is tooo too expensive & I have to wait til the lil guy can go to school full time & that won't be for 4 more years but I need the check now. Grrr...
I'd say too bad you couldn't work at a bank or credit union. They have a few chairs around and they can usually be placed at your station or atleast they did at the place I used to work at.

Banks and credit unions demand that you do sales as well as transactions and you keep your job if you sell the products. I can't do that. People don't need most of that crap and I'd feel like a criminal trying to sell them. Yep, they do have stools and I could deal with that but not the sales.
I really admire Aldi's. I shop them whenever I can because they provide stools for their cashiers. They obviously know that when a person is able to sit when they need to, they won't have a lot of doctor bills due to muscular or spinal stress. I'd take a job with them but they are inundated with applicants!

I hear ya. I have to sell w/ my lil job. And if I get another smart comment about not getting enough credits ect there's a recession on & that cute lil concept I will remind them of You can merely suggest to people how they wish to spend their money, you can not TELL them what to do with it or how to spend it.. .IT"S THIERS.

The HAVES hold on to what they HAVE and do not want the HAVE NOTS to HAVE. Same old story. why are they so heartless? I have met it out here too where the employees where I work are due a tax rebate and pay less tax from July and my boss did not want to give them the rebate that they were due. I gave them the rebate and when he questions this I will look surprised and tell him that it is the LAW. some people are so cruel to others - it always surprises me though it shouldn't as I have seen it so many times. Of course it makes you mad! who knows what the future will bring for you? You would have had more security in your old age.

Even if I only work a few hours, atleast if I could start contribuiting to a 401k again I'd have a lil something stashed a way. Very little but more than nothing KWIM?
