in coastal british towns seagulls are wrecking havoc by attacking people, or at least swooping down and grabbing sandwiches out their hands. unlike pigeons, gulls are quite aggressive (and big) and are becoming more and more confident. a local council has gone so far as to introduce fines for feeding them. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/aug/18/suffolk-town-fine-bird-feeders what wild animals are there where you live and do you like them or consider them a pest? i like the urban foxes and have nothing against pigeons, have to say though that gulls can be quite intimidating.

Well I live in the city and we have many different kinds of animals. My backyard is home to a red fox, he's really cool but, he really wants to eat my ducks and chickens. So, at times when he is brave, he's a pest. But, I don't want him to go anywhere because he is suppose to be on the rare side in this area of Ohio. We have raccoons and the get the lids off of my trash cans and make a mess so, I do consider them a pest. We also have possums and they actually scare me since they are so creepy looking. I think I would take the seagulls over my critters

ooh, raccoons. mind you if they're trying to get the lids off your bins and mess around in there that would be annoying (foxes try to do this too but they're fairly easy to keep out). people sometimes worry about their cats when there's foxes around and i certainly would be worried if i kept a rabbit outside. my family had chickens when we were growing up, they started off in a chicken run but eventually become completely free range. they wouldn't go back in the hutch at night but instead somehow got into a tree (they were bantums and could fly a little). think they were all eventually taken by foxes though.

I didn't know that foxes would get into the trash. We have so many stray cats around here that he probably has great meals and doesn't need to bother my trash. I didn't know that they would eat cats, thanks for that information. This has been my first house that came with a fox. My chickens are meat birds so after 8 weeks they are ready to go to butcher and honestly, I don't think that they could fly if they got old enough because they are so big.

i don't think foxes do eat cats. it might be possible that one might attack a kitten but they're not much bigger that adult cats and as cats can defend themselves against big dogs i don't think there is too much to worry about.

They have a similiar situation here, in Hong Kong, where native monkeys grab food out of people's hands and even sometimes attack them. However, it's much worse in India. A Monkey is considered a semi-important hindu symbol there, and so, the breeding of monkeys is sometimes even encouraged (:

they just had to do this here because the gulls weren't asking anymore, they were taking it.it's not going to do any good unless they put up signs for the biggest feeding offenders-the tourists.people that actually live here usually know enough not to feed them, because you'll draw 30 on one french fry. i have to laugh at some of the gulls in one part of town though-before the law, they were so fat they couldn't get airborne.kind of sad, actually.

I have a lot of seagulls where I live and I have never heard anyone call them aggressive or intimidating. And I don't see how fining people for feeding them would help anything. If they can't get some people food freely, that could cause them to want to steal the food.

As I live inland we rarely see seagulls and generally they fly over once in a while so do not bother us, although I know what you mean about being aggressive from my past visit to coastal towns. As for animals round here which are pests, well it has to be squirrels. Not only do they scare off the birds from the feeders I put out but they are now becoming so confidant that you can't even leave the backdoor open as they venture in the house looking for food. Plus I am definitely not a fan of bats. Where I live is surrounded by several big trees and each night you can see them flying out from the branches when it starts to get dark. It's the fact that they swoop at you so quickly it just gets to me.
