Using proper english when you chat online

Do you think proper english counts when you're chatting online or instant messaging? (: I mean, not as in typing out lol as 'laugh out loud', as these are 'net'-words which are perfectly normal, but really, when people start typing in all caps or in purposefully broken english, I just get exhausted trying to figure out what they're saying. Search for 'the AOLer Translator' and click 'I'm feeling lucky' in Google while you're commenting (: You might find it amusing.

I always try to be as correct as possible, when it comes to grammar. No matter what language Im speaking at the moment. I feel, that being understandable to everyone gives me a huge advantage. Plus it seems to be somewhat polite to others, if your sentences do not need decrypting or figuring out what I really wanted to say.

Hey there (: Thanks for commenting. Yeah, I feel that using incorrect grammar does undermine your whole message, and can make others not take you as seriously as they should be (: Sometimes I might just speak in broken grammar as a joke, but for me, occasionally is enough :P

Hey there (: Thanks for responding. Guess those words are handy for conserving finger strength :3 It's interesting though, as I've noticed that I type 'haha' and 'lol' according to context. For me, I guess 'lol'

Sometimes I type everything in capital letters to show the person I'm talking to over the internet that I'm angry. Since they can't see the steam coming out of my head, they got to know how I'm feeling some way. People don't use proper grammar like commas and capital letters because they type quick when chatting online but I don't get why people would choose to use broken English on purpose.

I have a hunch my neighbour's son just does it to annoy me (: I laughed hard at the AOL translator, because that's exactly how he types (: Heheh.

Proper english is always the ideal one specially in forums. Remember that you have the world as your readers. If we are taling about chatting in yahoo messenger, skype and other chat sites, it depends on who are you chatting with. Certain people have their own "language" (friends, lovers, family etc) and chatting is done informally. Thanks for this post. Feel free to add me as a friend.

Hey there, and thanks for the add (: I see your point about certain people and their own languages and inside jokes. Still, it is still amusing to go to places like Omegle and then see people trying to insult others in broken english. :3

Not really, If I'm talking to a friend, it doesn't matter to me (or my friend). But if it's someone who has just added me, I tend to talk in full sentences and words since not everyone likes to use chat speak in conversations.

Hey there (: Thanks for posting! Haha (: Yeah, I guess I'd like to keep a clean record before becoming close enough with a friend to use my own personal strange language :3 You have a nice day now (:

i think that people usually use the easiest way to chat and convey their message or try to communicate in a easier way. it is not important that a person have to use the proper english only when they chat and it is their wish and it depends on the individual how he/she likes to write online and chat. but usually most of them use the convinient way to chat and communicate.

Hey, No of course, I never use proper English when I chat online. I personally think that it would just take far to long to actually have proper sentences. I think that whoever actually invented these things are quite smart, good for fast typing. Make sure you have a good day, God bless and Happy Lotting!!

one of the reasons why i chat online because i want to improve my communication skills in english. so i see to it that my grammar is okay and so that the person that i am chatting with will not get confused about what i am trying to say. i sometimes use LOL, rotfl, etc too.

Well i try my best to use the proper English as much as possible. But since English is not my primary language, i do make fault every now and then, especially in the grammar. But i think it is ok since my chat friend usually just gonna ask more if they don't understand what i am talking about.

Well, me personally, I definitely use shortcuts (a lot) to type when I chat online because I talk to my friends and so I don't want to waste time by trying to type everything out so I just stick with shortcuts. I think it just takes some time to get use to at first, because in the beginning (depending on who you're talking to), everything may seem like a whole 'nother language but once you get the hang of it, it'll all be good. I use proper English when it comes to blogging or responding to discussions and such, so I keep my 'broken English' to my friends and private chats =]

Communications means conveying message/s I think that as long as the message/s is/are clear, grammar, spelling, punctuations are unimportant. If you don't comprehend what the person you are chatting with wants to convey, tell him/her/it so, so that the purpose is served. If someone is intentionally trying to pull your chain, well, if it offends you, you could always end the chat, if it amuses you, go ahead. As far as typing in all caps is concerned, its supposed to convey shouting for grabbing attention, and is generally frowned upon, at least that's what net etiquette dictates. I think that one must take things as they come without losing ones cool or presence of mind. Life's Lovely! Love & Live Life! Live & Let Live!

Sometimes, I am busy looking for meaning. I often be ridiculed them, if I do not understand. Here called the lingua franca. Capslock deliberately used to speed up typing. So no need to wait turn to type the next letter is located on the 1 key.

I think proper English counts in every form of expression, but then I'm a 57 year old avid reader and writer who was taught in the old fashioned way. The English language is mangled enough as it is, and I always use proper grammar and spelling, even in text messages. It's wrong to mess about with words, and apart from that, if you're posting in forums such as this, you don't know how many people will read what you have written. It matters a lot to me that even strangers know that I have a reasonable command of the English language.

I don't mind a few things, like using lol or the smiley faces. But, when they start shortening things like see to c or things like that, and I feel like I have to have a translation machine to understand them, it bothers me.

I consider online chat as a form of short-hand and personally think it's no big deal. typically we're talking to friends and even when speaking to them we speak informally. It's the same thing
