How much time is wasted?

I was just sitting here looking at the new discussions pages and saw someone that had multiple posts about cell phones. And, it made me curious about something. How many of you come to mylot while at work? How much time do you waste doing posts and stuff when you should be working?

That's a good way to be. Too much work time wasted while you're online might get you fired

I have this thing about being productive when I'm being paid for it.... But really, you get on this site and could easily be here for hours! How on earth could you start it at work for just a few minutes! [smile]

When I started my job two years ago I was told to take a book or knitting or whatever for the slack moments. So I did, at the beginning. There is a computer available for the guests and as soon as I realised it was not being used by many at all, I decided I would not be taking anything to do when my work was done as I could use it. Now colleagues are fully aware of myLot because I am always here when I have done everything pertaining to work. Some jobs have these 'perks' I guess

Does posting when you're on a conference call if you're listening to the call and doing your part on it count as wasting time at work?

I'm not entirely certain, but it probably does count

Not me, I am jobless. I come to MyLot to make a little extra money. When I had a job I couldn't MyLot and work, the job I had did not allow cell phones, but people had them anyway. Some people don't mind breaking the rules and can always find a way around them.

Unfortunately, that is too true, people always seem to find a way to break the rules.

Hmm. Well technically you aren't wasting time if you come on during work. Personally, I don't because I am currently out a job. It all depends on what you should be doing, compared to your job description. Unless of course you are on break at work, or your work could require downloading things. In the case of that, I'm sure it might not hurt to do other things while downloading, as long as you have your priorities straight. Some jobs, however, could be worse. So yeah, in some cases it would be bad... But not a 'Waste' perhaps. A waste of the time you could spend working, but not a waste of personal time.

Yeah, if one is on a break then it might be okay. If one is supposed to be working, then they should stay focused on that work

Well, right now at this moment I have no way to get online at work as I do not have internet access on my Cell phone, nor have access to a Computer or the internet. But I know now here in the USA there is Cell phone service like Boost that offers TEXT, Web Browsing, Unlimited Calls, and Walkie Talkie for only $50 a month so I am sure this is causing a lot more people to be online while working for sure. Actually I would probably be here in myLot during the Slow times if I did have access via my phone.

Well since I own my own business, it doesn't matter what I do on my computer as long as I'm not busy. I don't bother unless I have spare time which is a lot here lately because my business is taxes and accounting so the busiest season for me is over for the most part. We still are working but just not as busy. So I don't consider coming here or to other sites a waste of my time at all. I'm getting ready to open another business so my time will be limited once again.

Good luck with the new business Tax season has past, that's true. But, accounting goes on all the time

Thanks.. Our new business is going to be a used book store but it is in the same building as this one. True, tax season is over but we are still doing amended returns and extensions. Accounting keeps us pretty busy too.

Good question, I don't know if you would call it wasting time. I think a lot of people come here to chat with people all over the world, now if we weren't getting paid a few pennies it might not have the same effect. I don't think too many people care about that though. Time wasted, I guess if you didn't do your real job and spent all day on mylot that would be a waste of time to your boss.

If you spent all day mylotting instead of your job, the boss might just show you how to have a whole lot of extra time in the future by firing you

I only access the internet from home, so I only get to use it from here. Of course my husband get's access too my website and my forum at work. But that's different since it's sort of a hang out for most of his coworker's too. Even his boss is there when he get's a break. I think when people should be working they should be working not playing around online.

I love this question. I am no longer able to work so I'm not quilty but I have thought of this same situation re: computers. My daughter told me about someone who sits at the computer all day spending many hours on face book in between work assignments. I have also been told of people playing games during work hours, no wonder nothing gets done. No wonder when we phone a bussiness place we have to press 1 for this and 2 for that, there's no time for a live person to answer. happy posting my dear friend.

hi fwidman well when I was working I didnt have access to' the librarys computers to do mylotting even if Ihad known about it. my five dollar desk chair just went down a notch and really startled me so I ratched it up again. does okay for its cost. Does it count that I am mylottin when I should be on my way down'to meals or that the caregiven is startled that a person my age would'be on the computer all day.She just came to see how I am and I yelled fine as I kept right on typing.I guess I am well looked after here the caretakers love me as I do not ask them for a zillion things all the time and I treat them like friends.heck I have to live here so why be on outs with the caretakers?

It's good that you take care of them when they are taking care of you Surfing at work is a bad thing as then you want to surf more and more and work less and less
21 Aug 09
Hi fwidman, I am not working any more and ccannot be bothered with the cell phones, but when I was working, staff were not allowed to use their cell phones at work place which was good and yway cell phones was jut to show off to others who haven't got one, it didn't have all this modern techs on it.

Hey fwidman! Not guilty, your honor! I'm not working! I know that if I was working I sure as hell wouldn't ever been able to get away with that! My bosses didn't let us have Internet connections! They only put them on certain computers so that they could "watch" what was going on! I worked for attorneys and all we could have was a Word program to use for our documents that they needed for court and to do the dictaphone transcription! The stuff that we needed to use the Internet computers for we had to have a damn good reason to get near them!
