Preemie Twins (need some advice and outlooks)?

My sister had preemie twins, and they're almost "a year old" by the end of September. Through some unfortunate complications on my sisters side, my mother and I are [hopefully] going to end up adopting them. Since we are researching hard, we've never had any experience with preemie babies. I'm not sure about what complications they have since I'm still waiting for some paperwork to be sent to me, but I was wondering if any other parent out there who went through (or going through right now) the preemie stages can offer some very helpful advice. I want to know if pets are allowed to be kept around, and if it's easier to have a one story house for all the running around. What would we need to do to ensure the safety of them? Medical-wise, what kind of classes would you advise for us to take? Even the smallest thing you think would help us would be very much appreciated!!

Hello jellie and welcome to myLot. I don't have any experience with premies but have raised 6 kids. Others may be more qualified about any special care they ,may need. but if you can I would certainly get into a single level home. It will save you a lot of energy. If your upstairs what you need or want will be down stairs or vice-versa. It will also be easier to keep track of them. good luck with getting those beautiful babies

Hi and thank you for the welcome :) I will talk to my mother about the single level home, hopefully a bigger house will open up around the area that we live in (we live in a condo). Thanks for the luck too!

my daughter was born 3 and a half months preemature. she spent the first 2 months of her life in the hospital. after that though she was completely fine. raise them like you would any other kid. I'm not sure if they have specific medical conditions though in your case but my daughter didn't. They are almost a year now you said so they are out of immediate danger by then. my daughter caught up on her milestones at 18 months and was just like any other kid that age. She does seem to have week lungs because they weren't fully developed when she was born so it was my choice not to have anyone smoke around her or have pets. we are both prone to pnamonia and get it twice a year. Also i was just notified that the oxygen given to her in the hospital for tow months affects something in the eyes. Make sure at about 2 years old they get their eyes checked. my daughter has glasses due to being born early and not being developed. other than that it's all i can think of that my daughter has issues with. we were told just raise her like any other kid. no need to do anything different just because they are preemies. Good luck with everything

I am a mom of three children but none of them were born prematurely. My middle child is a boy of 2 years old., He had spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He needs catheter care and he is unable to walk. We presently live in a two story house and now I hope to be able to move to a bungalow soon. I have friends that had their babies prematurely. One had twin girls that were born whilst she was on vacation. One of them has hydrocephalus, the same as my son. I suggest you live in a bungalow if possible. Good luck with everything.
