Is the free domain co.cc a scam?

Hi Mylotters, I just registered a free domain from www.co.cc for one of my best friends as she wanna build a personal homepage on the Internet, and the co.cc free domain allows full DNS control, so I think I can apply some free hosting which support domain binding, then bind the hosting to the registered co.cc, that's sounds perfect, and she don't need to pay a penny. but but... The annoying thing is I noticed that the domain has a 1 year expiry set up in the control panel, what's the expiration supposed to mean? Does it mean I have to renew the domain after 1 year, will they charge me then? Isn't it just like a scam? I searched their FAQ, Help pages, cann't get a clue on this regard. So anyone who has the co.cc domain please share with me your experience, if they do charge after 1 year, I'd like to leave it right away. Any input is appreciated.

co.cc was a free domain. Totally free but you must donate if you want more than 2 domains in one account... But that's just history.. Now co.cc only giving a free domain for 1 year, then you have to pay yearly or more.. If you want a free domain, you night try cjb.net which is, AFAIK no domain expiration..

where are you get those prices information? it seems not expensive, but I really worry about the further renew, see, what will happen after 2 years? Do I still only need to pay the 3 bucks? or co.cc will change their renew fee then... I'm a little bit lost the trust of co.cc now.

I think you will find a .co.nr domain a much more reliable and trusted alternative. And what's more, they're free forever (: So that's a definate advantage.

but man, I just discussed this to one of my high school classmates, he told me that several years ago, co.cc had claimed that their free domains were free for lifetime... Now, I really believe that saying "none freebie are really free", maybe I'd better suggest my friend to buy a domain instead. Anyway, thanks for your information about the co.nr.

Oh, right. .co.cc give you a domain name forever, I think (the last time I checked) but I think you have to pay for the support they offer. -/me shrugs.- But that was last year though, and via word of mouth the same as you (: So I can't be sure.

Well, I have a .ws domain with Global Domains International and I've never had any problems.. They offer the whole package which includes; sitebuilder, hosting, domain, 10 free email addresses, biz op and Wordpress Blog all for $10 per month! Not bad when you look at all the other companies prices! I would highley recommend Global Domains. You should check them out! They offer a 7 day FREE trial. So, if you don't like them for whatever reason you can just cancel on day 7 and pay nothing. Can't beat that. Try it before you buy it! You can check them out at (www.marketingtips.mdorey1.ws) Thanks, Mike D.

I have an account there too and I am using it for my site on a free web hosting site. It will expire this December and so far co.cc did well on mine. According to their FAQ we can use their services for free for personal and non-commercial use, we don't even need to renew it but I'll write to them before mine expires on what do I have to do comes expiration date and if my site qualify their criteria of a personal and non-commercial use. I am actually considering to try their $3 a year if it didn't.
