Unusual but fun!

The last few days of my vacation were spoiled by the noise of a new roof being put on my house. One morning, while I was hating my workout, as usual, I noticed that the hammering was becoming really rhythmic. I turned off the music and danced like crazy to the beat of the roofers' noise for almost 45 minutes. It was a great workout, and it gave me a much better attitude toward the workers and their (now quite enjoyable) noise. The beat was amazing!

Wow what a flexible lass you are! Not many could do that for sure! I shall bare that in mind now everytime I come across some conflicting awful noise again and I too will try and dance to it, even if its only in mind! Fascinating what we can achieve if we work with our circumstances rather than against them. You must have gone into some tribal mode! Did you tell the workers after I bet they were flattered! Angelie

The beat seemed to relate to salsa. I think there must have been music playing up there that I couldn't hear, because the hammering was so rhythmic. I'm rather proud of my dancing ability at the age of 62! I thought about telling the workers what fun I'd had, but none of them spoke English and I don't speak Spanish, so I couldn't. I did feel a whole lot less resentful of their noise after that, though.

well you are an inspiration to me Cobrateacher, I shall try and join you in some astral dance, I can get so damn uninspired at times, thank you for the inspiration! Ahh Spanish were they, well perhaps they didn't have any music on at all, perhaps the salsa was just in their blood, boiling over on to the hammer? Angelie

Hey cobrateacher! That is so cool! I say whatever works to get you going, do it! I sometimes pick up strange beats too! I hate to workout so whatever works is a good thing! I am so trying to start my workouts and stick to them and am doing such a bad job at it! I had my boyfriend put my Power Rider smack in the middle of the livingroom so I wouldn't miss it and would make myself get on the damn thing everyday and so far it isn't working! I need some kind of way to make myself get into working out everyday! I have a tv and stereo in there so I don't have any excuse for ignoring the thing! I practically trip over it everyday! I need some motivation! Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Opal! I'm sure you know that the majority of home workout machines are used as clothes hangers! I have quite a complete gym at home, and I hate to work out, anyway. I'm forcing myself because I'm determined to lose the rest of the weight I need to lose. I got rid of 58 pounds, and I'm in the third week of a plateau, so I have to change it up and push myself harder. I wish there were a better way, but I don't know of any.

OMG! Did you see the Power Rider in my bedroom before my boyfriend moved it into the livingroom? That is exactly what I used it for before he moved it! It was there to hang my pocketbooks on! When we got the new high definition tv he said it had to go or else so I told him if he put it into the livingroom I would use it! Yeah right! So now it is just sitting there idle! I also have to lose some weight and I have got to start working out!

I've listened to roofers and hammerers up here. They are rhythmically challenged and can't keep a beat together.Maybe they're drummers or dancers. What kind of beat? Latin? African? This is interesting and neat.

Maybe they work part-time in a band in their spare time? One never knows, but that seems really, really cool to me.

It seemed a lot like salsa rhythms to me. I think they probably had music playing up there that I couldn't hear, since the beat was very regular.

I guess it is true when they say that it boils down to one's attitude. I am sure that you will not be able to make them stop from making noise since they are installing a new roof. The noise became a music to your ear which is good since you have made it your workout music instead of hating it.

Being so annoyed by the noise wasn't helping anything. The change in attitude did wonders!

It was fun. Now that they've finished, I just might see what I can get out of the sounds of the landscapers, who are usually hard at work when I get home from work. If not, well, I'll go back to my CDs, I guess.

What a cute story. Love it. Any workout is good even if it is to the beat of a roofer's hammer. You accomplished two things: weight loss and a new roof...lol

That's funny and great that you could turn the negative into a positive. Good for you!! I think its a good thing to do instead of fussing and fuming and getting upset over something you can't change. When I say you, I don't mean you you personally, I mean all of us. It's a hard thing to do so it is seriously great that you could do it and "dance to the beat." LOL

They finished the roof yesterday and, as annoying as they were, I sort of miss them since I discovered their dance beat!

What did you do? "Turn the beat around" I know that's the words to some song but I can't remember the song.

It wasn't any one thing in particular, but I certainly worked up a sweat!

This is so funny! I know what you mean about noise! I used to have a nice farm out here but now, I have a lot of houses coming up around me and I don't like it at all! There's always people coming and going, hammering, electric saws, and grass cutting going on. There's nothing I can do about it, though. When daddy passed away in 1985, the property was divided up between the children and my brother got the property behind me. He gave it to his sons and they sold it. My sister next to me in age got the property next door to me and she sold it. So I say it's thanks to some famiy members. Kathy.

I guess they weren't thrilled about staying there. Now that it's changed so much, are you thinking of selling, too? I bought the house I'm in about 18 years ago, in a rural, sparsely populated area west of Miami. Building laws wouldn't allow anything but farms anywhere near here. Well, they re-did the zoning, and now I live in the same place, but in the midst of very heavily populated suburbs. The city moved west and took over! In four years, when I retire, my husband and I hope to find a quiet place to move to, and once again try to live in a quiet, peaceful area.

I may have to sell it. I hope not, though. You see, my daddy bought this property in 1949 and he built the house I'm living in now in 1959. I inherited it from mother when she passed away in 1997. There are just so many memories here and it would be so hard to give it up. It's actually very painful to talk about it. I have a horse pastured out here, too. My sister lives in Birmingham, which is about 43 miles east of here, and she hardly ever came out to check on her property. She had to sell it, anyway, because she needed some money to pay the IRS. She said she really hated to, though. Mother and I seemed to think that the reason why my brother gave his property to his sons was so he wouldn't have to pay any taxes on it. We didn't really know for sure, though. My brother lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama now, which is about 52 miles south of here. Neither my brother nor my sister ever lived on their properties. Before they sold both of their properties, we had cattle and horses out here a lot. I was told that the reason why my nephews ( my brother's sons) sold their property was because they needed some money. My oldest nephew said he was forced to sell his part and now he has about 80 acres about 4 miles north of here. He has horses up there. The horse that I have now is one he gave me. Kathy.

Haha! That's great, and not all the unusual, you'd be surprised how many people find themselves dancing or walking to the beat of noises in the outside world that are consider to be 'music'. I know i find myself doing it sometimes, i normally stop for minute when i realize it and continue on with moving to the rhythm lol
