What's the Big deal about Facebook?

I'll assume that just about everybody here uses facebook too. I use it too, but under a pseudonym. I joined it because I hate it. I hate it because everybody uses it, and yet it's pretty shallow to me. Like Britney Spears, or Paris Hilton. Sucks, but everyone is intrigued. What do you need updates from someone you went with to school when you are not even close? Facebook is an invention meant to clutter peoples lives, to give a line to ISP's... Maybe it was invented by the Chinese to keep Americans sleepless, and therefore reduce their efficiency. Whatever. In case you use it, what's the big deal? Why should I sign on with my real name?

I don't really get it myself. I have a facebook but I rarely, RARELY ever go on it. One, I don't feel like its 'my space' at all. And no one really talks to me on there and yet I constantly know all of their updates how weird? Personally I prefer myspace because you can be more creative with your profile and you can choose which friends you want to be updated on. It is jsut so much more interactive then facebook.

Unfortunately I have never used Myspace, so don't know much about about it. Many times have had this push to open a serious account on facebook, but most times I fear I will end up like you. Plus, I want a little bit of privacy...

Wow I didn't even think about that! Obviously whenever my friend update I know about it but I never really realized that everything I update with is also seen by EVERYONE on my friends list. I guess its good that I don't update too often but yeah it definately lacks privacy, I agree.

Maybe it was invented by the Chinese to keep Americans sleepless, and therefore reduce their efficiency. LMAO! I think your right! I am on facebook as well. I do not use my real name and the sole purpose is to monitor my teen aged daughter. She gets made because I have never updated my status, I said why would anybody care what I am doing at this very minute.

Well, you are one of the millions forced to join to monitor someone else. Some people are there to monitor husbands, wives, name it. Once in a while I too drop in on my siblings profiles to check them out but, I've never been a fan. Thanks for the response; proves there are still reasonable people out there.

I for one do not sign in with my real name. In fact, I'm in the process of changing my fake name...again. My security settings are worse than Ft. Knox so if you want to find me, good luck. I do it that way because I want to be able to control who I even have some type of connection with. What's the big deal about FB to me? I didn't know much about myself before I started on it because I'm adopted. I've always displayed traits that weren't of my parents and the more quizzes I do, the more I realize, "Hey, that's me!" Through friends of friends, I've build up a great collection of people I chat with daily. It's all a matter of keeping an opened mind. Honestly, when I first started, I hated it too. Glad I don't anymore. Should you sign in with your real name? Only if you're comfortable with it. =) *Pleiades

I actually love Facebook. I see what you mean about getting updates about people you aren't close to anymore, but sometimes it is nice to be able to get back in contact with them, especially if you discover they will be getting married soon, are having a baby, or other life-changing events. The day-to-day stuff can get annoying, i admit it. However, for my friends that I am close to - I love seeing what is going on with their day and it gives us something to discuss later without having to say anything about what we did...just go right into the conversation. The games are cool, at least the two I play, but mainly I am there to stay in contact with friends and family. It is the only way I can get pictures of my 4 day old niece that lives 4 states away, so that can only be a plus.

Facebook is okay, but I prefer myspace. It's not facebook I'm confused about though. It's twitter...so same question to ya...except what's with the big twitter hype. Maybe I just haven't figured it out.

Two responses have mentioned Myspace, so I gotta check it out. Don't get me wrong; I am not ignorant-I have always known about its existence, and once logged on onto Lilly Allens profile but just that. Nothing deep. Twitter is a smaller version of facebook, I think, and the updates are more like text messages. Just one big fad, till people wake up.
