Americans remain the most generous people on the world.

I was born with an innate sense of patriotism. Thus I asked my mother why my pencils were American made whilst my grade school classmates endure the hard lead writing materials that can barely produce readable words. My mother was then a secretary at the US Naval Depot. She gets to bring home her steno notebooks and black pencils to transcribe work at home. Before the pencils get totally used, they land in my pencil case and I would trade them for the usual yellow pencils my classmates use. Who would want to be different from the others? Not me. And then my mom answered my query..."By and large, the Americans are the most helpful and generous people in the world." I weighed that response to my pencil question through the years. Yesterday, the news aired how so many anonymous Americans have come to the aid of people devastated by natural calamities, terminal illnesses like cancer, financially burdened families, and so on. I remembered my mom's answer. Yes, the world has hope because the Americans are still there to come to aid.

Is that true? are americans really the most generous people in the world? I don't think so, living here has just confirmed that only a few americans are really nice. and most of them aren't even entirely american...

I am a bit bothered by what you said... only a few Americans are nice, and most of them aren't even entirely American. I grew up with Donnie and Marie, Charlie's Angels, Cosby Show, Starsky and Hutch, Little House on the Prairie, Combat, etcetera... most of these shows embody the good of being American... mostly the themes delve on being of help to your fellowman. Of late, I watch Oprah and the nightly news. I do pray all that we see about America is not deceiving us. I gathered the info about American generosity from Brian Williams' news. I do hope you could be a bit more optimistic about your people. You can begin probably by being not like those who are not nice. Else ignore them entirely and have a new breed of people whose generosity springs from the heart.
