Yes, I have. I used to drive from Washington, D.C. to Maine on long weekends alone (I'm female). It was a 10-hour drive with one stop for gasoline prior to GW Bridge in NY. Since I started the trip after work I was in for a long haul and a couple of times when I spotted a man in unform hitching a ride to New England I stopped....mainly for the company. Once I even let the guy drive while a got a few winks. He was on his way to Bangor (just 60 miles from my destination.) I never had a problem and I think I would still do it today if I were in the States despite the fact that I'm in my 70's. I have a lot of confidence in people and that confidence has never let me down. I like being positive. My motto is "don't put obstacles where they don't exist".

Wow! That's great ;) I would have no problem picking up a hitchhiker if I knew they were harmless. I enjoy helping people out and being friendly ;)

Not exactly a hitch hiker, but one time I did come up on a couple in a serious fight (physical fight where he was beating her up pretty badly) I pulled over and yelled if she needed help...she ended up in my car with a ride to the local police station.

I do comprehend just how dangerous the situation was at the time and not sure if I would react the same in the same circumstances or not.
