Does this happen often?

Ok so my dog had puppies on Thursday night so the pups are only 5 days old...We have been having a heatwave at the end of this winter here in Queensland, Australia so my dog has been taking her puppies around the side of the house where it's cool & gets no sun instead of being in the hot garage...Any way, I went to bring josie & the puppies in & it looks like she may have killed one by simply sitting/laying on her...by the look of the pup's mouth, she was feeding on Josie but it's just bringing tears to my eyes just thinking of what the pup would've gone through before she died...the other sad thing is that she was the oldest pup & there was only 2 in the litter :( So my question is, does this happen often even by accident?

well what should i say, it just like a law of nature, you know. The mother's instinct tells that her puppies wont live long, or it may live but with such a disability. that's why every time my dog giving birth i will watching her and when the puppies popped out, evacuate them immediately. I mean it, because it is not the mother is such an evil, but it just something that she must do as a mama. well hope you take it as a lesson, and oh yeah it happen rarely. Just when the puppies have disability or get sick:) take care the other two will you :)

It is sad with the law of nature but this pup was just as healthy as the other pups a few hours ago...somehow I don't think Josie meant to suffocate her. Don't worry, I have learnt my lesson but this is the last litter she's having as when she was pregnant, my husband & I agreed that we were gonna get her fixed.
