Are you a tolerant person?

I sometimes see discussions posted here about Jehovah's Witnesses who come knocking on doors trying to convert others to their religion. Although there is usually a lot of criticism and talk about how to best deal with them, I wonder if many who are the most critical are any more tolerant when it comes to their own faith. They may not go knocking on doors but many use other methods to spread their version of "the good news". If someone believes that they are called to witness to others about the truth that they have found, how can they criticize others for doing the same?

I give a thumbs up to the Mormon's and the Jehovah Witnesses. I am a Christian, but I see all these people going around "spreading their good news" and it saddens me that Christians aren't as open about their beliefs. So to all who do go door to door. Great job in spreading what you believe to be truth. Christians we need to egt on the ball!!! God Bless. :D

Hi eternal_ink, Thank you for your comment, I've heard that the Jehovah's Witnesses don't consider themselves Christians, it seems strange because they claim that their teachings are based on the Bible. The Mormons however, do consider themselves Christians. Thanks for commenting. Blessings.

Mostly because I don't go around preaching to people about my religious beliefs! The way I look at it is I want information on others beliefs I'll go find it! It's like spamming people or those wonderful Tele-marketers that call you when you sit down to eat! tdemex

Oh yes talking about Jejovah's they really go out of their way from house to house, talking to everyone they met, leaving magazines and then later will ask you to subscribe. I admire the patience of these people though sometimes you just have to hide facing them as even you give excuses for you have to attend to some household chores, since they are in groups, after a while another group is coming. I believe everyone has just a differrent way of worship but as long as one believe in God, we are still brothers and sisters so no need to creticize ones religion. If you think where you belong is the best or better then go ahead show to others that you're happy and contented but never say bad or creticize other's beliefs.

yyes,i am a tolerant person.i don't hope to quarrel with other people, because i found that this only make our relationship more bad,so i often tolerate with onebody, although this make me feel suffer at that moment, but i often forget it.so i could not have this behaviour, for example hatred, don't ignore somebody,so my friends they often know what they done wrong and we will be good tomorrow.they said that i have good character and willing to make friends with me.

In the Presbyterian church we don't do that, but the Mormons do, and my husband is a Mormon, although Mormons hold back a bit more than the JW's when they go door to door. When a JW comes to my house, I put a Book Of Mormon on the table and say "we'll listen to you, but after, you've got to listen to us." You know what? They really don't hang around long! LOL So some of them aren't that tolerent of other's religions, yet expect us to listen to them! I don't think so. The "Book of Mormon test" is a good way to see how tolerent they are, before we start listening. It's also more effective than just kicking them out. I did have a situation years ago, when one came to the door, and I really REALLY didn't have time, and I told him so. the next day, he was in my Theology class. I was taking a class on world religions that year, and knew a JW was coming in to speak, and I thought it would be 100% better than having one in my house, because when I am in school I am prepared to listen, but when I am at home, I could be busy. As I said, samd one who was at my door, and he remembered me. So I told him exactly what I said above. I have a hard time with people coming to my door, but if I am in a classroom setting, I will hear whatever anyone has to say, because I know that I am not a TARGET, just someone there for the lecture. It was a catholic school, and he knew he was not there to convert, but to educate.

If a Jehovah's Witness knocks on my door, I try to explain to them that to me God belongs to all of us ,but I appreciate their concern regarding my salvation. To me spreading the good news means showing love by actions and not by words.

i've never come across any of those people in my own country, but i did when i was living in japan.. all i can say is that there are 'quite' persistent.. maybe a bit toooo 'forceful' to my liking... i mean, it is ok for them to 'preach', 'teach' and all that, but i dont quite like the way they want to 'force their religion' on you.. i think that i was 'kind' and 'tolerate' enough to lend my ears to listen to whatever you need to teach me, but.. you have your beliefs, and i respect that.. unfortunately, i dont share the same beliefs - so please respect that.. that's how i look at it..

Hello Pose. Speaking of tolerance, it is some kind of virtue that one can have. I think that I am a tolerant person because in most cases I can tolerate people who have done something wrong and I expect them to realize the wrong things that they have done some day.

pose123 hi I am tolerant to the point where my own well being'is affected in listening to Jehovahs witnesses whom I did not 'invite to my home.but I am a diabtic and told them I was'notinerestedin their talk as I was very happy with my'own religions which wass the t ruths. and I said my blood sugar is 'getting low so please leave. you wou ld think intelligent' p;eople would know they should go,but these did not budge. I had togo inside and drink some orange juice then sat down'as the room was spinning. those people were still on my doorstep when my son came out. He told them they must leave as I was ill.' they just stood there so he finally closed and locked the door. My health comes first before uninvitated guests.

Hi Hatley, I wholeheartedly agree with you, your health must come first. I also agree that these people should have left and I think your son was very reasonable, many would have flipped out at them especially under such circumstances. While I've heard of many being very difficult to get rid of, I've found others more reasonable. I am not here to defend such people and think when they refuse to leave, one should call the police. Even freedom of religion should not give anyone the right to trespass. Thank you for telling us of your experience. Blessings.

I don't do this, I feel it is wrong to try to influence any one's faith. I must admit I don't like anyone trying to talk me into a new way of thinking. I don't mind learning something new but I don't like the used car salesman approach.

It is my belief people should have freedom in choosing their religion, which comes from different background for such a long time. It might be hard to understand how big the gap, nobody should appear superior to order for a change. To maintain a homoneous globe, we have to be tolerant to some extent, while imparting healthy civilized believes and manners in a smart way. So many events have proved unsuccessful, some having caused human disasters. Wise people must learn the lesson now.
