I think that this is one of the most racist things around today. What about all the others in this country that don't speak English? Especially here in New York. Yes, there are many Spanish speaking people but there are also many others that don't speak English. The Chinees have been here many, many more years then the Spanish. Now we have the Russians and the folks from Africa. In all fairness shouldn't the phone say 1 for English 2 for an intepator?

Perhaps this issue should be approached by its root. If more people would speak English then there is no need for a press 2 for an interpretor option. If a company does not have an interpretor then there is no point in having such an option either. :P

I live in New Hampshire, about 50 miles from the Quebec border, the prodominant second language up this way is French. In the entire 27 years I have lived up here, I have only known two people who spoke only spanish. Yet, when I walk in to a super market here, the second language on the self check out machines, is spanish. When I call a company, the alternate available language is spanish. Many stroes up here are switching from offering Western Union to Moneygram, western union would send and recieve money from the u.s. mexico and canad. Money gram however is only offered in the U.S and Mexico, but not Canada...you know.....that country I only live about 50 miles from? C'est ridicule, combien de langues est-ce que je dois apprendre? In traveling to Quebec, I had to learn French to get by up there, I was expected to learn and speak it while in their country and I did so, out of respect as a guest in their country. If I were to ever establish residency, it would be even more so expected of me. I can also be fairly certain that if I ever move to Mexico, I would be expected to learn spanish. Pero se ya un cierto espanol de todos modos, yo apenas no pienso que necesito utilizarlo en mi propio pais.

I really dislike that as well, I am very much irked because I live in California and so many jobs require that a person be bilingual, I took 3 years of spanish in high school, but I am still nowhere near Bilingual, so the jobs go to the people that are, while I might be more qualified if that was not a requirement. For some things, I understand that there needs to always be a translator, like at health clinics. But a lot of retail jobs want bilingual as well, even an office assistant at a air conditioning company.

I think to live here you should speak english and if not get one of your relatives to interpet the issues for you that does know english. Why do the companies have to go through the expense of an interpeter? I also think a second language should be an alternative to an english speaking person living in the US. If you do not speak or understand english doesnt that just give you the right to be ignorant of the American laws? If I were to move to China I would never ever expect for them to change their ways around my English I would be obligated to learn chinese.

it shouldn't be press one for English... maybe press 2 for another language but we are in America we speak English!!! so it should be the default... now if u need it translated because you didn't take the time to learn our language then you can hope that the company offers that for you! I'm going to word this carefully so I don't get called a racist. My question is this: How many Chinese/Russian/African citizens do we have that have not taken the time to learn English vs. how many Spanish speaking citizens do we have that have not taken the time to learn English? I know several people from other countries (Lithuania, Spain, Vietnam, China, Korea, India, and a few African countries that I can't remember the names of), and they ALL speak and understand English.

I don't think there should be any other options besides English. Anyone that comes to this country to stay should learn our language, rather than us having to provide interpreters for every language in the world.
