Traffic control!!!

I just ran 6 miles this morning! Yeah me!!! It is quite an accomplishment I think! The trouble here though is the traffic. I have to run down the street car tracks. I am in New Orleans near St Charles street. I occasionally cross with traffic and I am very careful. I have to be because apparently they are not aware that (as long as I am legal) I, as the pedestrian, have the right of way! I do not cut in front of cars and such, but at intersections when I am following the lights too, I have the right of way. Isn't it common knowledge that the pedstrian has the right of way???

yayness on the six miles. I don't have much else to add on the right of way. Maybe move to Middlebury VT hehe. I know they are STRICT on the pedestrians have right of way. I used to work there and it was great for the pedestrians, not to mention would have been fantastic roads to run on if I was a runner at that time.

Who knows, maybe I will move there next! I always thought it was common knowledge that the pedestrian has the right of way! I go by the rules, I don't just walk out in front of vehicles simply because I have the right of way, I am just talking about common curtesy! So.. Middlebury VT sounds great!!

True...however...why not run somewhere, where neither you nor the drivers of vehicles need have to worry about such things; like a park, etc? In this way, it's safer for all concerned. cdrxo

I have to go 2 miles to the park. If I drive it is kinda silly when i can run it. Sometimes I run down to the park, around it and back.

I guess some drivers are just in a rush. And others are just plain ignorant. I was crossing the street once and saw a car coming. I continued walking and the driver rolled down his window and yelled "See the stop sign?! You're supposed to stop!!" It was annoying but I just ignored him. Maybe you can find a park or something to run in or going running really early in the morning where there is no traffic. I've went running in 5 in the morning once and it was really fun since there's no one else and it's like I owned the street.

I know.. I doubt there are too many who are just ignorant. maybe they just don't care! I was crossing in an intersecton the other day. I was crossing with the green light and some lady was trying to turn right on red. I was already in the lane when she pulled up and didn't even stop. I was already there and she acted like she was going to run over me... I walked... anyway since I was already in the second lane. SHe jsut kept on going! I was so mad!

wow. that is so amazing to run 6 miles. i have not run that long in my life. i think i should start running short distances to build my stamina for a longer distance run. cause i have not been able to jog even on my treadmill which i really need right now besides staying in front of the computer the whole day. it is also not safe to jog here in my place. usually jogger run early in the morning while there is no traffic yet. mostly about 4 am up to 5 am. but at 5 am traffic starts to build up. and in the morning like 9 am besides being hot already, there is so much smoke coming from vehicles and so it is not good to run in the morning here in my city.

Yeah, I try to run early in the mornings. I also started real slow and had to build up to this point. I've been running since February.

That should be common knowledge but I think unfortuntely people don't abide by this law. Its something you learn when reading the driver's manual for your license. I'm sure there are alot of accidents due to people not giving the pedestrian the right of way. I also bet the law is not enforced to make people realize you break this law you will get a ticket or fine.

I think it is common knowledge, but people just don't care. It takes two to cause an accident. That's why I am careful but it still gripes me!

Firstly, wow, well done on the six miles, thats fantastic! How long have you been running? I have a good friend who runs marathons and a 10 mile run is just a 'fun' thing for him, whereas I am keeling over after a mile. I really would like to be able to run well and its something I am working on in stages. I relate to your comments about crossing roads, drivers etc. I don't drive, and so I walk everywhere around my town and theres some quite bizarre driving behaviour out there! From the people who stop to let you cross, but then speed up when you do because you took too long, to the people who take the attitude that 'yeah, ok, you're standing at a crossing but I'm bigger and faster than you so nyaaaah! - to my favorites, the ones who kindly let you cross, thinking they are being EVER so helpful, only to see you ploughed down by the car that was speeding down the OTHER side of the road!! Good luck with the running! (Outrun those drivers, with asmug 'I'm environmentally friendly, me' look on your face!)

Thanks... I started running in February. I had to find a way to stay in shape that did not cost a lot of money. I started real slow and have worked up to this point. Sign up for a 5K and get on Runner's World for training tips... that'll get you going! I have to be real careful running here. The last place I was for awhile was very rural and no traffic I didn't know how nice that was!!

Well, yes back in the good ole days, it was! Now with everyone, in the greedy, me, me, me generation, apparently this is gone the way of the horse, it's sad but I come first, I'm more important than you, and best of all I'm in a hurry!. Sad but true, be careful out there! tdemex

I hear ya! It's the "american way" it seems, whoever is "bigger" and "faster" wants the advantage. It's sad but true... I am very careful. Thanks
