Will you do it? The place that I work right, which is in retail industry, now provide a special 1-800 number that you can call everytime you see or know dishonest coworker. And they offer you reward for doing so. So far after 1 and a half year I work there I never call this number and reporting anybody. But seeing a few of my coworker being fired for various dishonest reason, i guess somebody really use this hotline number. Usually if I come to work, I never planning for being "nosy" on others. I clock in , do my best, clock out, and get my paycheck. How about you, will you make the call?

I was in a manufacting sector. Suppose my employees offer me for a reward for identifying dishonest and coworker, I first see the nature of mistake and whether that is genuine. Before takng such a decision, I get all the necessary investigations and double and triple checked of the particular employees. If the employee does the mistake with someone's compulsion, then the third persons become a culprit.I will first warn the dishonest and suspicious worker by giving a another chance to rectify the same. If it does not happen, then I will hve to go with the rules and regulations of the company. I have been meeting lot of workers on a daily basis. Most of them are showing the interest on the productivity. Still, I feld few more are having the work only to disobey with others based on their political support. I do not want any third party involving betweenthe employees. I straighway warn and give adequate punishments for those.

Well, we are not obligated to do the investigation, they only ask us to give them the tip for suspicious behaviour between the employee.

Well looks like i get to be the odd ball out. I work for walmart and where they don't want you to "spy" on people per-say, they do want you to report suspicious behavior or outright theft. Yes we have cameras but they don't go everywhere, nor do they catch everything. I think people get this "you don't rat out your friends an coworkers" mentality and they don't realize that by being silent your really approving of it. Jos A. Bank where i used to work had that 800 number too. They deal in suits that cost up to 1,200 bucks with some of their top stores selling up to suits worth up to three grand. because the cameras don't watch the fitting room it can happen that someone could potentially walk out with something like that. Its happened. My boss at the time bought a Jos A. Bank suit on Ebay that turned out to be stolen. I think it was the assistant manager where the suit came from somewhere in cali had stolen it from the racks and smacked it up there. The 800 number is there so that if something is going on that needs to be addressed and you don't want to get hit for it by the person committing the act you can report it anonymously. And its actually a good thing because one of the reasons why prices on things go up is because of shoplifting. Outside lifters are problem enough without the employees getting in on the action.

I see your point too. All those camera everywhere, but it has limitation what they can captured. Beside that 800 number, we actually has another line to report suspicious customer too. And for that we also get little something, if it turn to a legitimate case. Until this time, I never caught or know any of coworker that I know doing something dishonest. But who knows.

The company gave him 1000 bucks, reimbursed him for what he paid for the suit AND let him keep it for catching the guy. that's like almost two grand for catching a thief online. Made me hopeful that i would have the same thing happen to me. I love suits and stuff like that. Of course i don't want the other person to steal either.

I would not do it for the reward...no. I have seen dishonest co-workers come and go. We have camera's and voice and our system is on the internet. My boss has all the tools he needs to spot a dishonest worker. It is a really hard spot to be in mainly because for one thing....I would want to make sure I was 100% right. I actually don't look for that sort of thing. Over the years, I have only reported 2 workers. One kept stealing on my shift. She was obvious. I felt as if I was stealing to ignore it. I talked to her a couple of times and told her that I didn't want to but would go to the boss if she continued. Still, she came in and did it right in front of me...so I did. The 2nd one....the woman was stealing from my till and making it look like it was me. I knew that I wasn't stealing but my drawer kept coming up short. It was only when I worked a shift after this woman. My co-worker & I set her up and proved to my boss who the real thief was.

I think if somebody else did it, and make other get the blame, that's worth to make the report.

when, it comes to the work place, yes I would use the number. When it comes to having an good atmosphere at the job, honesty and integrity are the two big things that are needed. Not only for safty issues, but also to run a good business, and maintain job security. Really, if everybody at your job turns there head when they see something go down, how long do you think the business will stay afloat? I don't think that any business can maintain itself if all all the workers are stealing.

Hi, oldmanhorrorfan I understand that the business need to stay afloat. I only wonder if it's little too far, with this reward that they offer. I don't agree with the workers stealing either, and I don't believe that they will last long too. Not mention we have to keep an eye also for the real shoplifter.

Ok, I respect how you feel. So I'm guessing that you're the type of person who would approach the culprit yourself and tell them how you feel without alerting the proper authorities. Right.

Wow this must be a really serious company however I hope they truly investigate the complaints and check well before giving warnings or firing them as this could be used as revenge. In my workplace there are many people backstabbing and still cannot understand what they get out of it. Maybe they pave their way for a promotion or being preferred by our bosses. I know who some of these are so if I had the chance I would do the same for them since they are doing harm to some colleagues and also to me whilst they do lots of other things but act as if they are angels.

O, I think they are really serious. And actually they are one of big department store here in US. And I know they really do investigate every complaints. One time I was in their security room to get some key to shut the alarm, and wow, they are pretty serious. Let say in a month at least they captured about 15 - 20 shoplifter and double on Holiday season.

If he really was doing something wrong, like stealing, disrupting others or not doing his job then I would think about reporting him but I wouldn't lie about it for the reward.

hi ibuemma that 800 number and the sneakiness of the whole' thing makes me shudder.its like turning in your best friend'at work because she made one boo boo and will probably never do it again.'if my employer were to ask me face to face about someone I worked with' I would give him or her an honest Answer. If the person was really'doing something horribly bad thenI would not protect them'but tell the truth.

It said that every call is confidential. And I'm not really sure how it works, but I guess they certainly investigate every reports before they decide to pull the employee and fired them. I certainly hope that the coworker that work with me in one department right now all good and honest, so I don't have to make the call.

As an employer I think that is a ridiculous policy!! spying on co workers is just pure wrong and that boss should be fired in my opinion. We have a lot of CCTV cameras in our premises and we also have anti-fraud, anti-theft systems in operations to spare us the embarassment of asking other people to do the spying..

hahaha, we got hidden camera all over. That's why I don't even bother. Let the camera do their thing. And let the security department open their eyes on every screen they have.

NO WAY this will bring as far as I'm concerned bad karma to myself. So I will not rat someone out regardless of how much of a reward they would give me. The employees that do rat on others think that they are doing good things for the company. Little do they know that the company will get rid of you too at a drop of a hat. As far as I'm concerned there is no loyalty when it comes to the employer at all. So no I would never rat on someone.

My employer said the purpose is to reduce shortage/loss. Ridiculously they believe that every $1 that customer might steal, dishonest employee will take 5 times of it.

Frankly, if I saw a worker taking something away from the shelf (for example), i'd not do anything about it (bad me); they'd be caught by the surveillance camera anyway, or when they're on the way out after checkout. I'd definitely NOT want to accept any reward for reporting because enticing someone to report in that manner is tantamount to bribing that person. If I wanted to make a report, I'd do it voluntarily. Thanks for the reward, but no thanks.

Sometimes I feel that if you want to be dishonest, stealing something why bother with all the cameras around. I don't know desperate the condition that they feel the necessity to steal.
