This is something that just occurred to me that I never do! Anybody else 'guilty' of this? Well, the good news is that I have never gotten sick from doing it, so whats the big deal? I use a hand held can opener.

I use an electric can opener the kinds that opens the can around the side so there is no sharp edges I do clean it every so often although I am guilty of not cleaning it every time I use it so far my family has never gotten sick either from the can opener.

I try to wash the can opener every time it is used. But I must admit, I almost never use a can opener. Maybe a can or pineapple or tuna now and then but that is it. I would think most things that would grow on my can opener would die of loneliness from lack of use.

I use a hand held one all the time too. I've had electric ones, but they don't seem to last very long. I wash mine each and every time I use it. I keep a small brush on the sink, one that's small enough to get into the grooves and clean it. I think the major concern would be with getting salmonella or something. It's just not something I want to put my family at a possible risk with.

Yea but you can get salmonella from non-organic produce you buy from the grocery story, take...Spinach for example http://www.salmonellablog.com/articles/salmonella-outbreaks/

I use a manual can opener, too! I hate the horrid noise the electric ones make. And I rarely remember to wash my can opener. I suppose I should, but I just don't pay attention to little things like that--it's a chore for me to keep up with the basic housekeeping, let alone all those little things like cleaning the can opener!

I clean mine, not so much so I don't get sick (though that is important) but if I open something that is sticky, like fruit, then the build up can slow down the mechanism and the blade will be less sharp.
