I work in a research institution. My job is to translate some book and do some research. Well, almost everyone in my office said that i am a workalchoholic person because I work seriously. Honestly, I work like that because I make my own priority and target. I have my own target but I can't show to everyone that this is my target and priority. And, beside that I believe working hard and efficiently is a kind of gratitude to the Almighty because by having this job I can gain new knowledge and earn some money for my family compare for those who don't have job. How should I respond to my colleague who think I am too serious?

A work aholic is not someone who takes their work seriously...it sounds like you are a responsible employee who is earning her pay the way she should. Any employer would be glad to have you on board. A workaholic is usually someone who spends 24-7 working for their employee, night and day, and bringing work home, ignoring responsiblities that they may have at home. That is a workaholic, which is what I used to be. I worked 10 hours a day, brought work home, and didn't stop untill 9:00-10:00 at night. I also worked on Saturdays till 1:00pm, and often at home on Sundays. I had no social life...and it seemed the more work I did, the more there was. Then one Friday evening, I walked out my work place around 8:00 at night, and discovered that I was the only car left in the parking lot, and that's when I learned that I was a complete idiot. I was so miserable. From that moment on, I left at 5:00 like everyone else and found enjoyment in life again.

I think it's unfortunate that many people don't take their work seriously. Too many people want to just put in time until they can go home, with no loyalty toward the company or interest in what they're doing. I applaud you for taking such an interest. Be proud that you have and consider those who don't, as losers. They're hurting themselves, so just smile and go on if they say you're too serious at your work.

Well, being workaholic is you don't give yourself a break or your too much stress with your work but you kept working. But in your situation you set your priorities towards your work for your family. Then I'm sure they always understand.
