Even for those non football followers like myself it is impossible to be unaware of this sports as a global sport, and naturally one is aware of a national team. I recently discovered how dire my knowledge was in this area as belived that the Greek team which has ALL local support, Panaithinaikos, was in fact the same team as the Greek team, when in fact it isn't. So what simple football errors can you correct fellow mylotters about?

I am of the opinion (gosh that sounds posh ) that it is a common error into which many incur to think that there are only 22 intelligent humans chasing after a ball when a match of football is taking place. There are indeed more than 22. Added to and included in this numer should also be the referree who also does a lot of running around. To sum up, the total number of representaives of intelligent human life running around on a football pitch during a match is 23 (twenty-three) I much prefer Formula1 - at least they have a car each and don't have to squabble over one

My dear Mys, I found your contribution with the information of 23 intelligent human life forms running round a field to have been a positive contribution to the subject matter raised. As such I have deemed it necessary to give your contribution a positive rating and this now means that you have earned the esteemed ranking of position number 5 in the great interest of Panaithinaikos, a great achievement I should add. It also raises the other question of whether the other people who choose to invade the pitch could be described as intelligent human form.

Thea don't make me be judge of everything dear and while you are deciding that, add to them all those who prefer to remain in (or near to) their seats while they throw all sorts of garbage onto the pitch. Some of these are even incandescent while other items, such as loo rolls, would appear to be for the personal use of the players themselves

Hi Thea, you probably think this is strange that a guy hates football as much as me but I do, I get fed up to the back teeth of football, it's virtually on all year round! And the money footballers get for kicking a piece of leather around the field for 90 minutes, such is my enthusiasm, interest in the game. I think the only thing I know is my father's football team and what colour they play in and what the name of their stadium is called only because I have had in drummed into me as a kid. I know more or less whereabouts in the country various football clubs are based, but that's only because I've got a sound knowledge of the geography of my country, ask me anything else about football and I wouldn't have a clue!

Wolfie is smiling because I got it right this time, (chuckles) what annoys me the most is that doctors and nurses who do something simple like saving peoples lives are paid far less than footballers are for kicking a piece of leather around, how dire is that? Hmmmmph don't get me started! I get embarrassed that our country has probably the worst reputation for trouble and hooliganism (is that a word?) which reflects on everyone including non-football people. As for watching football, we'll I'd get more fun out of watching paint dry, literally!

Hi Wolfie, may I begin by saying that I consider your contribution here to be of such great value that I deem it to be entirely positive and have thus rated your contribution as positive. So congratualtions you are now ranked 6th in the great interest of Panaithinaikos despite having no interest in football, a great achievement which you should check on tomorrow. Personally i find it not in the least odd for a guy to have no interest in football, the whole business appears to be completely tedious and leads to nasty things like hooliganism.

Well common misconceptions when discussing football, which should be called football and not 'soccer' as some countries prefer are as follows: The referee is a master of the five knuckle shuffle - it is quite obvious than many refs struggle to master the basic rules of football so mastering anything else would be an impossibility and I am open to mass-debate on this one . Who ate all the pies - another popular chant which unfortunately is not likely the case as the general food found at football matches feature burgers, chips and curry. Yes football fans have a far more educated pallet these days. and of course the big misconception of them all , which is football players desevre their outrageous wages. No one deserves to earn that much for kicking a pig skin, oops now synthetic ball, around a pitch and pretending that they have talent.

Hello, Thea. I presume you're up to speed on 11 players on each side and 45 minutes each way? Just wondered if you knew about 'diving,' which is dominating the sports news recently? It doesn't mean they're combining football and swimming in an attempt to draw bigger crowds and cut down on operational expenses - it's the offence of hitting the deck in order to gain a free kick or a penalty where no offence has been committed. Seriously, this has always been a red card offence, but it's only recently that referees have been sending off the big names for doing it, so some casual spectators may be surprised to learn how seriously it is viewed. Rightly so, in my opinion, as a well-timed 'dive' can change the outcome of the game. Despite what the papers say, it's nothing knew. When I was a 15 year old on the terraces of Wolverhampton Wanderers more than 40 years ago, the favourite crowd response to a ticking off for 'diving' was 'Don't tell him off, Ref - give him an Oscar!'

Hello Sandra, thank you so much for responding which such a positive contribution which I have deemed necessary to give an absolute positive rating to. So congratulations you will now be the 4 th highest ranking member of the interest Panaithinaikos, a great achievement. Now that's not spooky at all Sandra, you know about football and I know nothing. I have now learnt about 'diving' which does not involve water, many thanks.

Hi thea, There are a few thing you should know if you want to follow the game of football. Cards Yellow card- You will receive it when you make some nasty fouls. But now there are more action that would get you this card like pull up your shirt, time wasting, minor offense. Red card- Very serious offense like tackle from behind, elbow or head butting. 2 yellow cards in one games means you will receive a red card and you are out. Only goalkeeper can use his hand. And for throw in. Other players can use all their body except their hand. And the most famous team in the England is LIVERPOOL. Only those who didn't know the history will said otherwise.

I am learning a lot here Thea..... So the goalkeeper can use his hand (only one? left or right? ) and theref uses his whistle. So if you get friends with them two it could be fun! So if you get a red card and you are out, who wins? Those that are left or those that get out first? Is it like Monopoly or Snap?

Akuler my friend, glad to see you've shown up at last. Now I find your contribution to this question most helpful indeed so will be rating your contribution positive. By doing this you will now either retain your position of number 3 on the interest ranking of Panaithinaikos or even rise in the rankings. As I knew full well you had some strange notion of wanting to drop in the rankings I have foiled you, that being your suprise for today and the whole point of creating this discussion I never said that I wished to know anything about football. However you are wrong in saying Liverpool is the most famous team in the UK, it is actually Manchester United. This point is proven as I have heard of them.

I play football for my college team (: .. Anyway, lol .. What i find intriguing is how even avid soccer enthusiast do not know the 'offside' rule correctly. No, offside is not a physical side marked by lines which the ball is not supposed to cross. An offside occurs when a forward (players in soccer who are assigned the role of going ahead and scoring) is in his opponents half of the field, closer to the goal than the ball and has less than 2 defenders (players assigned the role to prevent the forwards of other team from scoring) in front of him/her. Well that's the most basic part of it. Now you know why the game suddenly is paused when a threateningly good looking pass is being made and the ball is given to the other team much to the disappointment of 3 people, the one who made the pass, the one who was receiving the pass and the coach of the 2 players who were actively involved in the pass. The 'offside' -nod- .

That is exactly what Arsene Wegner was getting all heated up about a couple of days back in Arsenal's match at the Old Trafford. He even got sent off the bench!!

I once corrected someone when he/she said something about the football team Bayern Monaco. I said there is no such team, as Monaco is a small country placed in southern France, which has AS Monaco as football team. There is also another team, from the German city of Munchen (Munich, in English), called Bayern Munchen (or Bayern Munich, if you will). In fact, I learned I was the one making a mistake. It seems that in Italian both cities are called the same: MONACO. So that member wasn't mistaking when he/she called the team Bayern Monaco, except I didn't know he/she was naming it in... Italian.

Hi stvasile, you really are into football aren't you, and you've already got your ranking in Panaithinaikos. These team names seem very confusing, as a no nothing about football at all kind of person I don't know how you can keep track of them all. It's all a bit like the car licensing plates and trying to explain why German cars have a D on the back. At least you have enlightened me that Monaco itself does have a football team but I'm sure it draws no hooligans amongst its fans.

I do know some rules about football, but only because it is a sport my dad watches on TV. I remember the evenings back in 1992 when Denmark unpredicted won the European Championships because they got a wildcard, as Yugoslavia couldnt compete because of the civil war. 11 players on each team, they play in various formations and strategies. 1 referee + 2 side/line referees. When they score a goal it is not always counting because if you break the rules obviosuly the goal is not awarded (beeing offsite as an example) And thats about my knowledge for football, cause i asked a bunch of questions when i was a kid, tonnes of other sports id prefeer to watch instead.

Well whatever actually happens in football, or doesn't come to that, as it is of no interest to me at all, you are now a signed up supporter of the great team of Panaithinaikos, who wear green. You will now be required to show vocal support for them at all time, whilst wearing green.

hi thea, how are u? i am ok and simply happy with my new internet connection. anyway, i am not a football fan. i just watch the world cup finals. in my childhood i was watching a football match when a player kicked the ball and it hitted on my head. i didnt see anything to 10-15 minutes. from that time it is existing in my life as a fobia. so i watch it on tv not in an open ground. perhaps i am derailing from your topics but i had to share my past with mylot. hahaha...

Hi Thea, Football is not famous in my country. So, i don't know anything about the foot ball. My country doesn't have the team that enter the world cup foot ball.. The only thing i know about it is 11 players playing and refree having some cards green, yellow and red. I don't know what are these, i sometimes saw the football in TV but i have no idea. Suddenly they give free kick, suddenly the player left the ball alone and another player kick it, etc., I don't know the rules of it too. I know only what is the goal, when we kick the ball in to the goal post, the team scored one goal. The another thing i know is there are two halftimes in the football with 45 minutes each. Sorry, I don't know anything about the football... Have a great day.
