So not even a year ago we decided to get some guinea pigs as pets. I thought they would be easy to clean and care for and yes they were but obviously not for my son who was supposed to look after them. He decided that they were going to be his pets and he was going to play with them, clean them out and look after them. Needless to say that after some time he did none of these things and it was all left to me. Every time we have gone away for a week here and a week there I have had to find someone to look in on them and feed them every day. I gave my son one final chance to proove to me that he still wanted them but he blew it and so I passed them onto someone who would be able to give them a better home. I was sad to see them go because I had become attached to them even if my kids hadn't!! They were never neglected but they certainly didn't come out of the cage as often as they should have and I thought that was unfair on them. Have you ever had to get rid of a pet unwillingly?

Aw, thats a shame, I'm sorry. I love guinea pigs too and used to have one. Actually a good friend of mine in England runs a guinea pig rescue - she takes guinea pigs and rehomes them, finds them nice families, and has a few as pets herself which stay there. Ihave seen photos of her little 'pigs and they are adorable - and we frequently have great excitement waiting for one to have her babies, or when a new one is settling in, or finds a good home! The only pet I have had to get rid of was my rabbit when I was young - we moved house to a place where we couldn't really keep her, and she was given to a family we knew.

Hi ya EnglishTeaDuck Yes it was a realy shame but can honestly say that I felt a bit of relief not having to worry about finding someone to look after them all the time whilst we were away. Aww that was sad for you when you were younger then and we don't always understand why our pets have to be taken from us. Thanks English

Yes, years ago when I was a child we had to give away family pets, because me and my family were renting a house and we later found out the owner of the house didn't allow pets, and at the time we could not afford to move out, so we had no choice but to give our beloved family pets away. me and my sisters were very sad that day, I'll never forget that day.

yes.. the first time i moved out on my own. i got two cats. one almost right after the other.. and stuff happened.. with boys whom i thought where friends, and things got stolen, and people got taken advantage of, and life just got way too out of hand, as it tends to do first time we experience freedom.. lol.. and when i moved back in with my mom.. the first time.. lol.. she said i couldnt only bring one. it was a hard decision, to choose one of those cats over the other.. but i'm sure the person who i gave the kitty to took good care of her. and my mother still has the one i brought to her house. haha. love mom! I learned from this. and i have not had a pet since..

Hi Sissygrl As long as we learn from our mistakes I guess it is ok and you did make sure the cat went to a good home as I did with Rolo and Polo. Thanks Siss

One cat who was peeing and my husband threatened to take him to the pound, so I gave him back to the person I got him from. I really loved that cat too. When I came home from work he would jump right into my arms. If I had known then what I know now, I would have tried several other things. :-(

Hello ANTIQUELADY At least with a dog it is easier to take with you, unless you go somewhere abroad of course, it's not so easy to cart a dirty great big cage around with you!! Thanks ANTIQUE

No, I never did and hopefully I never have to. It must so sad to be in this kind of situation. Pets are a part of our family. To give one away is like to part with our love one. It's a terrible situation to be in. Still, I know you have no choice. Let's hope Rolo and Polo will be happy in their new home.

Hi there prinzcy Yeah it's not good. I just felt it was so unfair on them as I didn't want them to become caged animals but pets but unfortunately because they were hardly let out that is what they did become. I have since spoken to the person who had them and he said they have settled in really really well. Thanks

Aaaah poor Rolo and Polo, great names for your piglets LOL! You were right what you did though, the worst thing to do is to threaten something and when the child doesn't do it, not carrying out the threat, then the child thinks oh well I am not going to get punished anyhow so I will continue as I was! This is a good learning opportunity for him. I am sure they have gone to a better home. The only time I had to get rid or say goodbye to a pet is when I left my ex, Remember me talking about my beloved cat Zeus? Well it broke my heart to leave him, but it was my ex's cat and I still have a beautiful picture of him in my arms which I will forever treasure.
